Rome in late August - Anniversary trip - hotels etc
Discussion
I'm going to take my Mrs away on a surprise trip to Rome over August Bank holiday weekend - which happens to be our anniversary.
Does anybody have any hotel recommendations? Ideally centrally located and not crazy, stupidly expensive.
As an aside, is 3 nights enough to see/do Rome? Neither of us have been before.

We went in August last year but nearer the start of the month - very warm indeed but with enough planning and a plentiful supply of water, hats and a "brello" from one of the immigrant types you can get by OK.
We stayed here: http://www.hotelmascagnirome.com
Really nice hotel, decent location and on the route for all the tour buses so you can get a ticket for those and use them like taxis to get around the city. Also close to plenty of nice restaurants but be aware that a lot of locals go away in August to escape the heat so certain places may be closed or on reduced opening hours.
Amazing place, I'd love to go back again to explore it properly, 4 days only let us scratch the surface really.
Stayed here : www.ludovisipalacehotel.com booked through www.venere.com
Do a city-centre coach tour and some Roman stuff plus a few churches and three days will fly past
Several hotels have terraces with views for dinner too eg Hilton (very expensive)

It's going to be very hot. Queues for the Vatican can be 3 hours up and there is little shade. I know I couldn't do Rome in August but I will admit to being both Ginger and delicate.
Last time I was in Rome my mother joined my wife and I out there so the best option for us was renting an apartment. The place we ended up with was huge and had a terrace that wrapped around it and was about 700 square feet. The cost was reasonable as well. Another nice thing was the laundry room as this was our second or third city. The location was up the road from the coliseum and a short walk from the spanish steps. Unfortunately, I don't have the details now but this gives an alternative option for you to consider.

I read that a lot of Romans take their holidays from 15th August, so quite a few of the smaller establishments will be closed until the end of the month.
I went in early August last year. I didnt find the queues too bad, but it was very hot. I think you would be better off going in spring or august.

Don't know about hotels, I was well and truly ripped off last time I went to Rome. Put some uncomplimentary (but true) remarks on a website about the price and the noise at 2.00 am from a night club directly opposite my room and the cheeky proprietor had the sauce to "fine" me 500 euros - charged to my credit card demanding I took my remarks down. It all ended OK, my Credit Card company refunded the 500 euros and I cancelled that Credit Card straight afterwards.
For the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican buy your tickets on line if you can, you then turn up at the time you have applied for and you don't have to suffer the awful queues. The Sistine Chapel is wonderful and the Vatican museum too, allow a full day to do both, you won't regret the time there.

My wife and I spent 4 days in Rome 4 years ago in January - it was warm enough through the day - nearly 20degC) but freezing at night. We found that the queues are MUCH smaller through the week - so much so we are going again this October - I've just booked today! Flights from Leeds £225, just sorting out whether to go apartment or hotel
Yes Rome will be hot in August but it really isn't that bad! The many public water fountains make sure you can keep well hydrated and cool without buying bottled water.
As for hotels I've stayed in a few including the Hilton and Continental. The former is too far from the centre to walk although a great location. The latter is at the top of the Spanish Steps so couldn't be better for location although it's a rather anodyne international hotel (but really great concierge).
The last time in Rome, in August, we stayed at the Hotel Forum www.hotelforumrome.com/ which overlooks the Forum and Colisseum. Typical yet excellent Roman hotel - smaller rooms - but meticulously clean. Restaurant and bar on the roof; great for breakfast and evening drinks. We did eat one evening in the restaurant to enjoy the sunset views but to be honest the food was only good (there's so much good eating to be had in Rome!) rather than stunning. It's the kind of thing you do once if you stay there.
Generally the Romans are on holiday in August so the traffic is quite subdued but the city is full of tourists. Queues for the main points of interest can be horrendous so you need to plan to do these early before the hordes arrive by bus. Alternatively, do as we did and focus on the the less well known (yet equally interesting) sights and galleries as these tend to be a lot quieter. Of course this was our third visit so we had been to the Vatican/Colliseum/Forum etc.
Great city, great food; don't let the temperature put you off!

Did a Thursday/Sunday trip. Great position next to the Forum, managed to do the main tourist sites as a first timer to Rome, loved the place and the hotel was perfect. Vatican trip bonkers but worth it. Wear comfortable shoes, you'll need them!
