Google Maps here

At the moment I've just laid out the general idea of the trip...

Any good roads on the way I can pass through? I accept I'm entering/ exiting many places in a different way so miss some things.

Cheers

After the Nurburgring you could go into Koblenz and follow the Rhein river road which is very scenic. At the moment your plan takes you along the E31 which is just a couple of miles across from the Rhein valley.

Looks like you're using the motorway to go north from Como - you can drive along the lake and up over Splugenpass instead.

To use the motorways in Switzerland and Austria you'll need to buy their special passes. It really wouldn't be worth it for you in Austria (although the tunnel is lonngggggg).

I wouldn't bother going right into Koblenz
go off the 61 at Boppard and follow the Rhein down to Bingen for a scenic drive, then get back on the 61 again

bit further down your route takes you right past the technik museums at Speyer and Sinsheim

edit: earlier, where the a1 and a61 overlap for a bit, you can follow the 1 towards the ring instead of the 61, saves going over the same road twice

Why Amsterdam?

Personally I don't see the attraction with Euro trips in a loop like this. For me Slovenia, Croatia and Romania are much nicer, cheaper, less busy and have better weather. Did 2500 miles to Croatia and back last summer taking in some amazing (empty) roads, awesome food and gorgeous national parks and waterfalls.

This year we are going to Budapest then over to the Transfargasan and then back via Belgrade (party city) and the KRK Island in Croatia.

Also, I found Italy (apart from Lake Como) was pretty dire, people weren't very friendly and everything was quite expensive. Plus pretty much the whole country closes for August, not good when you're nearly running out of fuel!
