Family Holiday in Paris - recommendations please?

My wife wants us (2 adults + 10yr old son) to visit Paris for her Birthday. So for up to a week in August.
Questions:
Is it practical to drive there (Hotels with parking nearby)?
Where are the best areas to stay (good Parisian atmosphere, cafes, bars etc)?
£150-200 night Hotel recommendations?
Best transport options - do we walk, bus, metro?
Other recommendations please?

Just a handy tip, but a lot of the sights are free on the first Sunday of the month.
Arc d'Triomphe etc.
