The receptionist at work is off for a family weekend away around about xmas time.
Anyone able to recommend a decent "budget(ish)" hotel?

What's you definition of budget?

When we last went, we stayed at Dream Boutique Hotel which was just over $200 per night (very reasonable for central NY)

We stayed at The Muse hotel (Kimpton brand) which was a minute from Times Sq, very clean and comfortable boutique hotel and very well priced at around $200 a night.

The US computer hacker community tend to use the Hotel Pennsylvania in Manhattan for their stuff saying it is the cheapest one around. Try that.

If you want real budget but great location, friendly, and comfortable (if basic) accommodation then I can recommend this place:

More budget than that red box the chancellor carries.

NYC is expensive for hotels. Depends on your budget OP, they have hostels with private rooms but these aren't as cheap as you'd expect either.

What I've done in the past is book something that is fully refundable/no penalty at a price I'm happy with then nearer the time have looked out for deals. I've found Travel Zoo to be very good for NYC.

You could consider staying in one of the other boroughs (Brooklyn etc) but you'll loose a bit of time travelling into Manhattan and back if that’s where you want to be.
