Folks,

Can anyone reommend a good campsite near Brixham? I'm taking my little man away for a couple of days of boys camping & we would like to stay somewhere near the beach that doesn't have all the clubhouses etc - just a really nice, simple campsite with good pitches, showers etc.

If anyone can make a recommendation, I would be most grateful.

Alex

I don't know any near Brixham but unless you've any specific reason for there, I'd recommend Dawlish Warren instead...

How close to the beach are you wanting?
I live about a mile away from Brixham and most of them have big clubhouses and the like because as you probably know here is a pretty large tourism area.

From my recollection Brixham doesn't have much of a beach, it's a harbour biggrin - Paignton, which is the next place along, has a lovely beach. Goodrington Sands...a bit further along, has campsites - then you get to Torquay , which has a beach, but is a lot smaller and isn't as good as Paigntons.

I agree with Condor that Goodrington is the best beach in Torbay. However, the campsites around there are all filled with the big centres with annoyingly happy people telling you to be happy.

More expensive for a start.

I think (re your original post) you should be looking at Paignton. That's cheap and cheerful with a great beach.

Salcombe is very expensive, however maybe a site near Bantham or Bigbury may be quite nice. Not much to do other than the beach though but some great scenery of you are into that kind of thing.

Salcombe is very nice - some great and safe beaches but expensive.

If you are on a budget, try Exmouth - great sand, very safe water. Otherwise, Dawlish is good.

I'd give Torbay a miss completely - never enjoyed the beaches there nor the towns either (although Paignton Zoo is excellent). I'd look further south or perhaps East Devon (not Sidmouth though, stony beach), or, if there's no particular reason to be in the area how about North Cornwall? Bude's usually pretty good.

A few friends camped at Centry campsite which is literally 10-15 mins walk from Brixham harbour. They used it when we went down for the trawler race and it didn't look too bad. Not anything fancy, but if you only want it for the pitch and its locality, its pretty ideal.

Have a look at Marine Park off Goodrington Road. Its part of 3 sites ran by the one family, the other two have the usual static/tourer/camping mix and clubhouses/pools etc but Marine is the quietest by far and a ten mins walk tops to Goodrington Sands, a favourite of mine since I was a kid, the place we got engaged and where we still take the kids to supposing we've had a "real" holiday too!!!

The website for the three parks combined - www.beverley-holidays.co.uk/

Edit: they appear not to offer camping at Marine any more! The main park is nice, but further from the beach and not quite what you described as being after, though its no Butlins by a long way!
