I'm heading down to Portsmouth at the start of next month. Anybody got suggestions on where to visit, eat, drink etc? I'm going with my wife and kids so no strip clubs!

If you are staying in Portsmouth I think you might be able to fill a weekend. Southsea is nice, fun fair, Aquarium, D-Day museum (if that's your thing), Castle where Henry VIII watch Mary Rose sink from. Not sure if you can still get boats to one of the forts in the Solent scratchchin
Shopping I suppose Gunwharf is your best bet, lots of outlet shops, restaurants, Bowling, cinema that type of thing.

I think the historic shipyard is a must, HMS Victory, Mary Rose and Warrior all great.

Spinnaker Tower is good if the weather is nice.

How could I overlook those. Although in my defence you have to go to Gunwharf to go up the tower biggrin

Wife, 2 kids, petrol, food, £200 gone. I love Beaulieu but it's an expensive day. (To poor people like me anyway biggrin )

Thanks for the information guys. I like the sound of Southsea, the D-Day museum and the historic docks. I'm stopping in a place called Fareham (visiting family there) any good pubs, restaurants round there.

Villa romana in fareham high st has been pretty good on the 3 visits I have made , it's non-pizza mediterranean .
If youre really hungry/brave , try one of the car parks on portsdown hill overlooking Portsmouth , home to 'micks monster burger' . Worth stopping there during the day for the view and ice cream from local company verrechias with the orange and yellow vans , it's delicious !

If you do the historic dockyard then for a break take the 10 minute walk for a set lunch at Raymond Blancs in Gunwharf, it's good Q and reasonable to boot, something like £12 for 2 courses.

my home town - what flavour of restaurants do you like? best chinese (IMHO) is LJs tables are tightly packed but food is good, there are several indians includiing a buffet style one that is very central, there are quite a variety of others around depending on preference (and actual location - you might not be staying in town itself!?) Pubs - I live slightly from the centre so don't frequent the centre pubs often (even when there!) nearest to me are the White Horse or Cob and Pen in Wallington, which are both okay for a quiet drink.

Fareham is a bit of a hole really, but one junction along the M27 you have the Hamble River, the Jolly Sailor at the top is a nice place for lunch and also Howards Ways fans! :-)

oi! blah Although the Hamble is technically in Eastleigh, it has more to do with Fareham in practice + the other direction, since historical stuff is being mentioned: 'the finest example of a Roman fort in Western Europe' - Portchester Castle

Okay, town centre isn't that special, but not 'a bit of a hole really'... there are far worse places in the area if stones are to be thrown! punch
wink

The Submarine museum is worth a visit - Ferry across to Gosport and then a 10 minute walk, or you used to be able to get a tourist boat directly from Gunwharf Quays. Harbour trip might be worth doing, depending on what ships are in the harbour. (Have we got any surface fleet left)?

First Fareham, then Gosport - are you trying to get the guy killed???

If visiting the dockyard, HMS Victory started it restoration this week so you won't be seeing any of that.

That place sounds just like what I'm after, thanks for that. If I didn't ask I'd probly end up in a Harvesters or a Toby Carvery (if theres one there).

Forgotten about that, certainly worth a hour or two of your time.

If you love English history and thus by default have an anti frenchie gene it has an interesting history beyond the Romans too. It was the departure point for Kings (Eddie and Harry) to the battles of Crecy and Agincourt. To rub further salt into Anglo-French relations it was later used as a prison during the Napoleonic wars.
