I hope this isn't construed as advertising (other great foreign currency exchanges are available wink ) as it's just some friendly advice but I received an email today saying that Travelex are having a 1hr happy hour on all foreign currency bought online between 12-1pm tomorrow Friday 22nd July - they advertise as being the cheapest anyway so worth having a look tomorrow if you're planning on buying currency anyway - no details on what the rates/discounts will be.

Hope this is of use to some of you.

The last 3 trips I have done I have got a better deal by changing my currency over there, or using the autobanks at the destination. There was about a 6% improvement at least in FX stores / hotels in Turkey, Australia and Menorca on the very poor UK airport rates.

Still waiting on the latest bank statement from last week to see that specific Euro rate but I am sure it will beat the UK FX robbers with close to 20% between their buy and sell rates.

Rip off Britain is still on the go, buyer beware.

I'm going to Florida and I've never thought of changing money over there, I can't say I've ever noticed a foreign exchange in the Kissimmee/I-drive area (I'm sure there is if you're looking for it) and don't fancy a drive into downtown Orlando to change currency!

It's not really a fair comparison - surely anyone who's travelled before knows that the very worst exchange rates are to be found at the airports.

I could probably get a 6% improvement on airport Travelex rates by buying tomorrow at Travelex online.

Like I say I'm not advertising on their behalf, they offer competitive rates anyway and are bettering that tomorrow, I'm sure someone can benefit from my post.

What happens if you use you UK bank card to pay for a meal or take cash out of an ATM overseas ?

Is it a charge, and then a crappy exchange rate ?

Given your card rate is the wholesale exchange rate and not a retail rate, then even with the fee they charge, your still getting a far better deal. Pay for a meal and take out some local readies. In any event, you want to exchange cash, no matter where you are in the world, changing a currency into local cash is always best done when in the country.

Companies like Travelex never give you a good deal.
