Must sees in the Lake District
Discussion
We will be visiting The Lake District soon (staying on the shores of Windermere) and I wondered if anyone could recommend some places to visit. Family friendly would be better (2 daughters aged 14 and 10). Recommendations for good places to eat would also help. I asked a similar question last year when we visited Wales and the suggestions that people gave kept us busy for the whole week

If it's a nice day try and visit fell fell foot park NT http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-fellfootpar...
bottom of the lake on the east side, if you have a dingy or canoe, they can spend ages in the river/lake, hire rowing boats, cafe etc.
If you have bikes with you slide over to Grizedale forest on the other side of the lake, think they have a GO-ape there as well, http://www.forestry.gov.uk/grizedalehome also Tarn hows just up the road is good for a walk round.
Also near Ulverston South lakes animal park is a really good attraction well worth a visit, up close and personal with the giraffes, lemurs etc http://www.wildanimalpark.co.uk/
Always best to try and get discount vouchers, bogof's or Tesco vouchers as well

You can rent bikes at Grizedale and Whinlatter - looks like great fun, as do the Go Ape trails.
The Keswick Car Museum closed down earlier this year. There's an excellent mining museum there though.
Honister Slate Mine is excellent.
Hardknott Pass is an 'interesting' drive, with a large ruined Roman fort near the summit.

If you want an easy and relatively short walk drive out to Buttermere and walk round the lake....It's literally 15 years since I did it but it's about a two hour walk IIRC and quite flat so a good one on a less energetic day . Because Buttermere is hard to get to it's much quieter than a lot of the Lakes and you can take in Hard Knot and Wrynose passes on the way.....which as a Pistonhead you should drive late at night when no on else is around and pretend you are Colin McRae!

The Bowder stone in Borrowdale

Excellent call. Quite a few of us stay at the hut there a couple of times a year - off there for the weekend tomorrow, in fact

Was a bit errr....bracing, back in Jan

There's also a lot of nice scenery worth checking out in the Borrowdale area - other side of the road you've got the river, and a couple of miles walk down towards honister you've got a couple of nice walks, as well as some good places to grab a pint and some food. The Scafell Hotel serves a cracking pint of Sam Smiths, food's not bad either

I would recommend Whinlatter rather than Grizedale for cycling with kids. Grizedale is pretty tough if you're not used to cycling.
Go on a boat trip on Coniston, stunning lake especially if its calm.
Take the ferry over Windermere and have lunch in Hawkshead.
We are staying on that side (Lower Wray), are there good pub(s) in Hawkshead ?Go on a boat trip on Coniston, stunning lake especially if its calm.

That cabin looks like the sort of place you shouldn't stay in as part of a horror movie. !

Honister slate mines was fantastic, so was talking to the owner about his Gazelle helicopter [I serviced them in a previous job]
The lake ferry tours are good for a bit of a relax.
The electric boats are good for a laugh too.
