Has anyone got any personal recommendations for city breaks? I'm thinking:

  • Good value
  • Good food and drink
  • Friendly atmosphere
  • Not too far; say no more than 2 hours ish flying time from London
  • Plenty to see in the town or the immediate area
  • Relaxed atmsophere but plenty going on - not interested in clubbing 'till 4am (on this particular trip anyway!) but a few characterful bars and maybe some live music or something would be good ... a bit of culture. wink
  • Probably somewhere quite traditional - sky scrapers don't really do it for me!
The OH and I are looking either to go early September or some time in October and just getting a few ideas.

Thoughts:

Scandinavia quite appeals in theory, but can't say I know much about it
Reykjavík was a thought, but I've heard it's quite expensive?
The olde-worldeness of Bruges quite appeals (from what I've seen), I'd like the beer and the OH would like the chocolate so that's an option, but is it a bit too quiet and/or touristy?
Did vaguely think about Marakech as somewhere different, but not sure what we'd do there - the whole cliched 'haggling for tat in the bazar' thing doesn't appeal...

Also, although I say a city break, we'd consider short breaks out of town somewhere too if there are any good suggestions!

What about Lucca in Tuscany? I can offer you an apartment which is perfect for 2 people and right in the city centre. I am also able to offer a villa right in the centre of Florence which can cater for 8 guests. Very luxurious and has been featured in many interior design magazines.

Hi,

Looking at your website it's possible you might be a bit out of our price range, but if you have any info you can PM over about the place in Lucca I'll definitely take a look. Was just thinking Italy might be an interesting addition - been skiing in the mountains and done a couple of business trips to Maranello, but never really explored the country.

Bruges is nice, but there can be a lot of tourists there. Brussels is ok for a weekend but is quite pricey. Prague has plenty of sights to see and isn't too far away.

Marrakesh is very nice and weather is good, the locals do pester a bit but that applies to most of North Africa, Turkey etc.

Possibility. I guess somewhere like that would provide the opportunity to head out into the mountains if I got bored of wandering round a city...

It's very pretty, lots to see and do in the city and surrounding areas, some lovely bars/restaurants, lovely people, and of course you have the river, Mozart, Castle, Mirabell Gardens, and Sound of Music stuff going on too.

The best bit is it's only 15 mins from the Airport to the city, so minimal faff.

We stayed here http://www.sacher.com/en-hotel-sacher-salzburg.htm - which was bloody expensive, but it was as a special occasion. Good website here http://www.visit-salzburg.net/

Try Vilnius in Lithuania - its a great little city, not too big and very friendly with some great restaurants and bars (have to do a little digging as some are not that obvious). Not as touristy as Tallin and more to do than Riga if not wanting just to drink.
Plenty of cheap flights with either Ryanair or Wizz Air too.

...And you can visit Red Bull's Hangar 7 when you're at Salzburg Airport too if you fancy it... :-)

I surprised the OH with a long weekend in Venice a few years ago, it was brilliant. We stayed outside the city to keep costs down and it wasn't too expensive. Weather was fab in September too.

This.

It's an incredible country and a definite must see for anyone vaguely interested in the planet we live on. We went in the summer not sure what the weather is like in September.

Rekjavik itself is a nice enough place with some decent restaurants and tons of bars/live music. Goes all night if you want but you obviously don't have to do that. There is plenty to see in the locale which will fill a weekend very nicely.
