TBH, I'd probably do the usual touristy stuff, a lot of early shopping for christmas, eat a lot of BBQ, and go shooting.
If you're going soon, I'd expect it to be chuffing hot and humid.
I'd also see if you could take the odd long weekend and go a few roadtrips; getting down to florida is perfectly doable. Apart from that, get up in the mountains, do the usual local sightseeing stuff.
If they want you out for 4 months...look in to visas.

Spent holidays in Raleigh several times when a mate was working at NC State University.
Had a few good laughs in the Flying Saucer

Mitches on Hillsborough Street is (erm) famous as the bar in Bull Durham. And a decent bar too.
Take a short drive over to Chapel Hill. On junction of W. Franklin Street and North Columbia St is a Ben and Jerry's shop (worth a visit - and Ice Cream goes down very well in the NC heat). Take a walk along E. Franklin - classic American movie stuff with all the University Frat houses,
For an entertaining breakfast a short drive to Cary gets you to Gypsy's Shiny Diner.
A drive out along some of the more minor roads to South of Raleigh is interesting ...... Tobacco fields, rusty trans-ams outside shack type garages etc ..... went to a "Barbecue Shack" out in the sticks once. I reckon we were the only people in the place who weren't related to everyone else (including the staff).

Things to do if you are based in Raleigh:
Outer Banks for the beach, shrimp and soft-shell crabs
Angus Barn and Sullivans (downtown) for great steak in contrasting atmospheres
Tailgating at a college football game, preferably NC State
Ice hockey - Hurricanes at the RBC Center
Acquire a friend with a boat so you can go tubing and water skiing at Falls Lake (or just go there for the scenery)
Blue Ridge Parkway
Asheville and the Biltmore estate
Nascar for the weekend at Charlotte
For a great weekend away head to Charleston.

I'm into model aircraft & went & found a couple of clubs in the middle of nowhere. reat facilities, tarmac strips etc. Big lake in the centre of the city that hires row boats & canoes as well.
Charlotteville mueseum of Nascar was great as well, got taken there by the guys I was meeting.

Go and see the Nantahala Forest and raft the Chatooga river....

It's where Deliverance was filmed. "Squeal like a pig boy"!
It's proper rafting with grade 4,5 and 6 rapids....no messing about. You can't raft grade 6 which is the highest.
When you go over some of the rapids there are four or five people ready with rescue lines and a couple of people with kayak's. Quite an Adrenilin rush on some of them but very good safety. I've done rafting in three or four places and they try and make it exciting by messing around and flipping the boats knowing everyone is safe. This one no one went in, no need for messing about...some genuine heart in the mouth moments but great fun.
