Thinking of next years holiday, anyone have experience with this area..?
Possibly recomend any villas with own pools or best companies to approach.
2 families, 4 kids under 10 so would prefer reasonably close to a good beach.
Looking to drive down with a stop over en-route, many thanks for your help.
Regards
Richard.

I can highly recommend the lucca area - we stayed at a lovely villa on the slopes just north of the town and had a great time. Too isolated for the kids though. We used romesweethome.it from memory and also use www.villarenters.com

I've done this 4 times now, and driven each time. We've not stayed near the coast though, so can't really recommend a place. Taken various routes down, the best has been over 3 nights. First stop was Metz, though TBH it was nothing too special, just a stopover. Then over to Interlaken. Lovely town, and if the weather is good, there's some cracking scenery to discover. There's also some caves not far, so the kids will enjoy that. Over the alps to the 3rd stop in Lake Maggiore in the Hotel Verbano on the island of Pescatori. Not really a kids hotel, buy there's others on the mainland in Stresa. The last day down to the villa can be a trawl depending on the day. Saturday seems to be the day the Italians travel, so avoid the A1 past Florence at all costs.

We stayed near Sienna the time before last at a place recommended by a PH-er. Lovely place, but we were there in September, and mozzies were a bit invasive to say the least. If you are going down saturday then make sure you stock up on supplies the same night at most of the supermarkets tend to close on a Sunday, though this is changing.

The return is normally done in 2 hops, though we did do it in one once. Again with stayed over in Interlaken, then just a stopover in France somewhere. The italian motorway services are crap IMO, so avoid them at the normal mealtimes, they're mobbed. If you are going to stop there, then park your car out the way as they're worse than the French at car-park-dinging. All in all though, we've had fabulous trips down.
