Airmiles members lose 'free flights' ‎
Discussion
Thought I would let it start in here as Im not sure how many use the news forum...
All you frequent flyers that store up your airmiles and use them as a perk to get some free flights better start cashing them in asap.
There is no such thing as free flights anymore and they will cost more airmiles... oh not forgetting you now need to pay all air and fuel taxes!!

They will now be called Avios and their excuse is that they are just moving with the times and moving inline with other operators doing the same thing.

This is a bit of a pain to say the least.
We save via Tesco etc and a few years ago got 3 x business class returns to Orlando; plus a hotel suite for a week; and car for £100 all in !!! It was 45,000 air miles mind you
Now it looks as though it is going to get expensive which is a shame as we are already up to 30,000 AM's in readiness for our next big trip

I wonder how many people use miles to purchase entire flights, compared to those that just upgrade using miles?
I'm going to head over to the FlyerTalk BA forum and read some angry posts. Frequent Flyer programmes seem to be getting worse. I wouldn't have immediately thought it was a 'environmental thing', more perhaps to do with airlines not making as much money as they want, despite the fact that in 6 years the price a business class ticket to NZ has doubled.

With BA Miles you have always had to pay the Tax and Fuel duty, I think a 1st class return to San Francisco was about 250 pounds plus miles. Some stuff from the BA site:
BA Miles have been the familiar currency of the Executive Club. However, in November, we’ll be renaming them as Avios points, which will be the currency for all loyalty and reward programmes owned by British Airways' parent company, International Airlines Group.
We’re sure you’ll welcome Avios points. Their value remains the same, so 1,000 BA Miles will become 1,000 Avios and there’ll be more ways to spend Avios than you currently have with BA Miles.
Next year, we’ll introduce even more ways to earn them too.
We’re launching a new type of reward flight – Reward Flight Saver.
This is available to all members who have earned or spent 1 Avios point (or BA Mile) in the last 12 months and it is designed to offer better value on reward flights in Zones 1-3.
All you will pay is Avios or Avios & Money, plus a flat fee of:
£27 / €27 if you are travelling in Euro Traveller
£34 / €34 if you are travelling in Club Europe

Taxes/surcharges etc have always been extra with BA Miles anyway, so no change there. It's never been possible to have a completely free of charge flight when using BA Miles. I've still got nearly a million BA miles but swapped over to the Star Alliance when BA started threatening strike action a couple of years ago.
As far as BA Miles are concerned, it seems the only CHANGES are
1. New name: Avios
2: fixed charge per booking rather than various charges
3. Some destinations require more Miles, others less
Taxes etc are already charged for BA Miles bookings, so no change there.
I'll still uses my BA Miles to get me Club tickets alongside the free companion ticket.

I was recently looking at whether it's worth switching from a cashback credit card to one that gives loyalty points with airlines instead.
While there are the odd ones here and there that turn up to be bargains, mostly using them to upgrade from cattle to business class on long haul, generally the freedom of getting the cashback and doing whatever you want with it seems to be winning.
Especially, as the different airline's loyalty programs all make it more difficult to get good deals out of them.
Anyone here collect major miles and benefit from them ?

Im buggered if I can work them out at all, I have access to 34k airmiles and am looking for a ticket from auckland to either bangkok or singapore, it will only put it through the partner airlines and when I choose business class it says I will need 50k airmiles but still lets me put the ticket through and pay for it, for only £110
Sounds like theyre going to make it more complicated and lesser value if anything.
