I need ideas - 'special' birthday, October, warm....
Discussion
OK so Mrs C is coming up to a significant birthday at the end of October. She's made it quite clear that apart from a big party she wants to go away for a few days - somewhere warm.
In the past this was normally achieved by heading off to Rome but this time it has to be different and I'm struggling a bit.
For practical time reasons I think I need to confine the area to Europe or Middle East but farther afield isn't out of the question.
The key criteria would seem to be ambient temperature - warm, not necessarily hot for sunbathing etc. It can be a resort type break or a city break. She has mentioned Crete - what would that be like in October? Other thoughts are Egypt or southern Italy.
Open to any ideas so can you help!

Try Madeira - the capital Funchal perfectly combines a resort type break and a city type break. The weather is nice and warm, quite a few top quality hotels and restaurants and its just a lovely place to be. Easyjet fly there so it needn't cost a fortune
Interesting - it had crossed my mind but when I did a quick check all the flights seemed to go via Lisbon thus making it quite a trek. If EJ fly direct I might well look again.Cape Town....perfect time to go as it's stunning there in the Spring (if your Mrs like flora and fauna it's a fantastic place to go) and also whale watching season amongst many other things.
Yes it's a 12 hour flight but it's only one hour's time difference and the flight leave late at night so perfect time for sleeping. You could very easily do it for a long weekend. Flight's expensive but it's cheap when you get there.

Went to Sorrento last September: would not recommend it. Far too many tourists, particularly from the USA off of cruise ships, all restaurants and shops crowded, expensive even for Italy, costly Naples Airport to Sorrento transfer. However, we had a fab hotel, it is a nice town and getting a ferry to elsewhere such as Ischea is a nice thing to do each day.
Re Madeira and your post, we went to Madeira last year..direct flight Gatwick to Funchal with TAP.

End of October I don't think you can guarantee warm & sunshine anywhere in Europe - you might get it, you might get rained on.
If you want guaranteed good weather then (IMO) you'll have to go further afield. OTOH if you are only going for a few days then do you really want to do 10-12 hour flights?
Canaries is probably the obvious target or maybe Dubai or similar (if you like that kind of thing).
I think Crete will probably be a ghost town by the end of October, its really geared to Summer/package tourism like most of the Greek Islands.
