I quite fancy a dirty weekend in York with my missus. Has anyone stayed at any nice hotels there that they would recommend?

Yorks first 5* hotel, Cedar Court, opened a year or so ago near the train station which looks OK, but I would recommend this place out in the countryside - http://www.thestaratharome.co.uk/ or their sister hotel and restaurant - http://www.thepheasanthotel.com/ - set in beautiful village with fantastic food and accomodation in both venues and the chef was on great british menu.

Location is a little remote but there is some really good driving roads around Sutton Bank along with nice walks and scenery.

The Star is great, but it's a bloody long way from York (only 25 miles, but it's a long 25 miles)!

Yes, but Sutton Bank is always better in the anticipation. In reality, you always get stuck behind caravans.

Hotel du Vin? I've only been in the Brisol one but I understand the York one is also good.

For an off the wall choice try the Sidings Hotel http://www.thesidingshotel.co.uk/

The bedrooms are converted railway carriages, small but different, has a great restaurant too

For a more traditional choice try the Parsonage in Escrick, beautiful hotel

How much are you wanting to spend?

for cheap and good location, can't fault the Novotel.

Rooms are what you'd expect. There's parking a plenty (secure). And it's within walking distance of the city centre.

If you want plush plush, The General Tareleton (SP) at Knaresborough is a properly classy place.

Sutton bank is currently shut as well.

My mate always recommends the The Churchill if it must be York - although he's biased as his son is Chef there. http://www.churchillhotel.com/

Don't bother with the Star - If you want proper posh try the Feversham - voted as one of the best 101 in the world recently. The bonus is that you are at the start of one of the best driving roads too. It has a spa for the O/H for when you're out blatting around the moors.

I know the sous Chef and the boy's a real encyclopaedia when it comes to food.

Used to stay there a lot for work. Town centre hotel wise for a decent price for a good standard but not flash you can't beat the Novotel or The Moathouse (now been renamed something else but its right by the river Park Inn rings a bell). If you are taking your car don't stay at the hilton the parking is awful and they move them around all the time so you have to leave your keys with them and they move the cars in the basement.

If you're stuck for bars to visit, can recommend a few too
