Cheapest way of gettin from Houston Airport to Austin

Will be flying to Houston soon and need to get to Austin.

Looked at hiring a car, but I only need to go one way, and it works out quite expensive to do so.

Any suggestions of cheap ways to do it?

It would be a 3 hour drive, so to walk is definitly not the option I am looking for here.

Amtrac trains go from Houston to Austin at $44

Continental fly that route apparently, not sure on the cost but internal US flights aren't normally too expensive

When i went to Texas a couple of years ago i put in Austin as the destination instead of Houston and the flight with Continental worked out about £25 more for the extra internal flight. Have you tried that option??

Just hire a car. It's not that expensive, nor that long a drive. Saves faffing about and it's about 2.5 hours.

If you want to fly try South West airlines. You shouldn't have to pay a one way charge on a Hire Car if it is in the same state. We did Dallas to San Antonio one way with no sur-charge.

On another note we had a really good time in Austin.
