Italy v France for romantic cottage style tour

Naturally whatever country we end up in I will learn how to ask for four packets of cigarettes

For our honeymoon next year my fiance is surprisingly receptive to a mini tour of France, heading down south at a lazy pace, staying in (hopefully) luxury cottages etc on the way. I'd like to include Bordeaux, Mt. Ventoux and the Rhone Valley in the planning.

BUT

We would both love to do a similar style trip in Italy but the mileage would be much greater than just doing France but would Italy be a better place for such a holiday?
