Not that I am hugely experienced with either, but I much preferred Rome. The good stuff is much more centralised so easier to get round on foot. Paris, much like London, is vast and not so easy to get about in.

Rome is a hands down win for me (but I prefer looking at Roman history than arty farty French stuff smile)

Rome.

As for where to go, just throw a dart at a map. You can't move without seeing something old and famous in the city.

Cheers chaps. We both like history more than art so think Rome will be more fun.

Certainly. I used to live there and disagree with most of the above but I don't know Rome so well. I don't think Paris is at all spread out. 95% of what's to see is within the Peripherique and the Metro is pretty good for getting around on. If you really want Old History, as in Roman ruins, then obviously Rome is the place to go but even in Rome it might be a bit chilly in January for that sort of sightseeing. If you're only looking for a weekend away you also want to bear in mind that it's quicker/easier/cheaper to get to Paris than Rome (presume you are in the UK). Where to stay is a bit trickier in Paris it depends on your budget. Last time I went with the family we stayed in La Defense which is convenient for the Metro Line 1 which covers a lot of the tourist sites.

And as for where to go - the Eifel Tower at night is a different beast to the daytime and I'd also recommend the Bateaux Mouches if you've never been there before as a good way to get an introduction.

FWIW, I visited Rome on January 4th, and whilst I didn't feel the need to unpack my mankini and stroll about, it was mostly sunny and warmish (for January anyway). Could just about get away with wearing a shirt during the day and then a lightweight jacket for the evenings.

The central (and interesting) area of Rome is very small and if you base yourself centrally (ie near Pantheon) you can cover everything on foot smile

One is a fabulous city, with nice firendly people, a great atmosphere, some amazing sights and great food and wine.

The other is Paris.
