Luxury hotel in Scottish central belt.
Discussion
I'm looking to take my wife on a romantic break early next year, as I'm originally from Scotland and she has rarely been there that is the chosen destination.
So far I've considered the Balmoral in Edinburgh and Cameron House on Loch Lomond.
Unfortunately my knowledge doesn't extend further than those two
Ta!

I live about 5 miles from Cameron House. It's not that good tbh. The best hotel in our neck of the woods is Mar Hall at the Erskine Bridge. This is the one that Kylie and all the other celebs stay when they're in Glasgow. If you want something in the city centre, then 1 Devonshire Gardens is absolutely fantastic, as is the new one at central station which I've not had a chance to get round yet, but it's getting really really good reviews.
Another one, a bit smaller, great food, great service, limited spa type stuff is the Knockderry Hotel, which is about an hour's drive from Glasgow city centre and overlooks Loch Long. Gorgeous rooms and proper proper luxury.

The Witchery and The Glass House in Edinburgh are both rather good.
G;ass house is in a poor state now, wife stayed there a couple of months ago, the doors wouldn't lock, the beds were never made, and the attitude she encountered from teh staff made her want to move hotels. We stayed in Cameron House in July, we had a suite in the old part, and it was fantastic, staff were really nice and welcoming, food was superb.
For Edinburgh I'd highly recommend Prestonfield House Hotel.

There are usually some good deals to be had on laterooms.
Or if you'd like to go a bit further north how about Gleneagles?

Few recommendations from me....
Gleneagles- about an hour from Glasgow and Edinburgh.
blytheswood- centre of Glasgow but very very nice
Balmoral- centre of Edinburgh. Very traditional and luxurious
It really depends what your after, if you like niche/ boutique hotels or traditional.
Either or TBH Gleneagles- about an hour from Glasgow and Edinburgh.

As we missed out on a traditional honeymoon we have decided to try and have one luxury weekend a month so we will hopefully get to sample city/country/traditional/contemporary.
Toying with the idea of one night by Loch Lomond and one night in Edinburgh. Is Gleneagles suitable for a couples retreat or is it more, as I imagine it a golfers hotel?
Gleneagles is very large, has great spa and the most beautiful grounds there is.
It's got three golf courses but they are a bit further down the road and has its own clubhouse. So main hotel is very detatched from golf.
Personally really like the blytheswood...nice spa and in the centre of Glasgow so has numerous options for food and drink.
Also, Glasgow being where it is- 1hour drive/train to Edinburgh and about 30minutes from loch lommond.

Haven't been for a couple of years, but Cringletie House is a delightful country house hotel just north of Peebles. OK, there's no spa (although they do have in-room treatments now), pool or golf (but there are courese nearby - it is Scotland!), but the food, rooms and scenery are fantastic. And it's near enough to Edinburgh for some castle-spotting and shopping (If that's your/her thing)...
