I'm contemplating 3 or 4 days in Kuala Lumpur during early March as part of our three weeks in Thailand and was wondering what people would recommend to do and see?
Obviously there are the Petronas Towers, I've also seen a few companies offering to take you out of the city into nearby wilderness to do things like trekking and waterfall abseiling.
Also any recommendations on hotels? We’re looking to do this on a budget of around £50 per night. We’re not after anything fancy just decent lodgings and air con.
Any thoughts would be very much appreciated.

Cheers

We've done this loads of times, you can not get into the Petronas towers unless you go the day before and book your ticket then you can get to the 42 floor. KL Tower is good China town is good, Batu caves and the Hindu temple,
2 full days is enougth.
50 pound will get you a nice hotel, try the Radius, have on offer on of 20 pound anight, whic I sawa s i walked home tonight, it has apool and is good,YY38 is cheaper clean ensuit etc beds have foam mattress but 15 pound anight for two, both are in a good locaion for tourist.
KL is a shopping city nothing of any historic interest. good nighyt life and the two hotel above are in the middle of it, do not get the train into town it is 7 pound ahead and then the taxi to the hotel, a taxi from the airport is only 19 pound for two direct.

Went in 2011. Did Batu caves, Pet towers, and China town. Also spent some time just in the city, but 3 nights was enough. We also did a tour which was very good and saw some great statues, the royal palace (the horses do bite!!) and a number of other things for a great price.

Enjoy!!

We stayed in the Sheraton the last 2 years we did the GP and it was excellent, certainly go for tower view room. All you can eat and drink dinner was circa £30 which is a bargain. Don't bother with the kl sky tower thing, nothing really worth seeing. Very good Irish bar at the bottom of the twin towers serving good food and beer.

Other things to add;
the monorail system is very good and very cheap
you can get a free tour of the rain forest near the skytower which is well worth doing
there is a nice reggae bar in Chinatown with a good vibe and usually a good mix of travelers and locals

But yeah, as others have said, 2 days in KL is enough to see the sights and do what needs to be done. Other than that its nothing special. There is a museum - cant remember which one - which was pretty good as well. It might be the national museum or something? Housed in a grand building down one of the main streets. Do not bother going to the space museum, it was designed for 3 year olds.

Thanks very much for the input guys, some things well worth considering there.

Drillfield47 - Thanks for the heads up on the Sheraton Hotel, it looks fantastic and they've got an offer on at the moment with a free night stay so it puts it well within budget!

does anybody have any advice about train links? We were thinking about leaving KL on the train and going up to Krabi In Thailand, perhaps on an overnight train.

Cheers

Unless you actually 'want' to do the train journey for the scenary etc, you might want to consider flying to Krabi from KL.
It's only about an hour if that and shouldn't cost more than about £40 max if you are prepared to get up early !!

Chers for that NicoG. We have actually now booked flights from KL to Krabi. The train jounrey looked like it was going to be more hassle than it was worth and it wasnt overtley obvious how to go about booking it online either.

Thanks again to Drillfield, we have also booked the Sheraton hotel for three days too. It was too cheap not to!

You cant do kl to krabbie by train, you can do kl to hatyai and then get a taxi van, there is no line to the weat coast of Thailand, it runs up the east to bangkok, Air Asia is ok, I assume you know not to stay in krabbie town but to get on the beach outside.

If in KL then you should party down at Changkat/ A;ways lively with many bars to chose from.

The Tapas place at the top of the area is especially good.

No problem. If you walk along the road at the rear of the hotel towards the twin towers you will cross the river and find the subway.... Only 2 stops to the klcc (the towers themselves) so about 10 minutes door to door with no chance of being ripped off by a taxi driver!

At the side of the hotel is a very good wine shop so you can always surprise the good lady with some fizz!!!

If your worried about being ripped off by taxi's here's my rules, never get a taxi from the hotel unless the conserge call it, the guy waiting around always want to go off the meter. If you get a taxi in the street tell them you want the meter before you get in, just walk away if the wont, try to get a blue taxi, they are twice the starting price (Around a pound as opposed to 50p for a red one) and the meter charge is more but they tend to be newere and better driven. If at the tourist place walk away a few yards and flag down a passing taxi don't get the guy standing around.
If there are two of you a taxi is mearly as cheep as the train, the trains are much more difficult to use starting from this week as all tickets are sold by machines now and you need to know which station you want by name,

Thanks again for the insight guys.
My next port of call was to see what the deal was with regards to getting from the Airport to the hotel. Public transport (train) was my first thought, but if it's nearly as cheap, and it sounds a lot easier, then would it be advisable to just get a cab from the airport?
