Somewhere for a civilised stag do?
Discussion
I am getting married in July and was talking to my best man about a stag do last night.
I dont want a 'typical' stag do involving drinking copious amounts of lager, dressing up, singing songs, getting tied up somewhere and going to lap dancing and night clubs etc etc.
I have done (some of) that before and am now in my mid forties having been married before. Most of my friends that will come along are late 30's to late 40's so we are all a bit older and wiser.
Ideally we just want a relatively low key affair, somewhere in the UK for 1 or 2 nights, where we can all stay and have a good weekend. We all appreciate nice locations with good food, real ales, wines and spirits etc. as to daytime events, I'm not too sure but we need to do something to avoid all day drinking!
I also want to keep it to a sensible budget as I don't want to expect friends to stump up a lot of money for this.
My best man has suggested Edinburgh, but he has not looked into it yet. Any other good suggestions appreciated.
Thanks

How about going to horse racing somewhere?
I've been to Edinburgh on a stag do and would strongly recommend not going there. Doormen do not like stag do's/groups of 3 or more men at all and we spent most of our night walking streets trying meet up with each other. Worst night out I've had.

How many of you are there?
Last Summer for a 40th birthday (age ranges from late-twenties to early 40's) we had a long weekend here;

and spent most of the day time on here;

(graded like a ski slope, the green is more challenging than you think, the blue definitely for confident novices, the red for experts and black for experts with no fear..)
Lots of things in and around the area to see and do, plus you can be as noisy as you like (we had a DJ friend with decks playing at the campfire) as the only neighbours are the owners and they're really friendly.

Don't really mind where in the UK. I am in the midlands so it would be nice for it to be somewhere we don't usually go, whether north or south.
Edinburgh doesn't sound great then, but IOW sounds good. How about the channel islands or IOM as alternatives?
Not sure on numbers but probably 6-8 of us max so not a big crowd.

I've played rugby at a tournament in IOM - dull, old, wet and rather boring. Unless you are going for the TT, I'd avoid it.
Jersey - been several times some for rugby, some with the wife. Could be very nice weather wise in July. Bars seemed fine in the evening in St Helier. If you're into sailing type stuff or fishing theres quite a bit of that.
No Idea about the Isle of Wight
