Air miles/avios

I've tried to google but it all got a little confusing! I'm wanting to know about air miles and if anybody can simplify it for me that would be great. I.e 'I went to Aus and then America and that gave me enough air miles to get...........'

I will be travelling to Spain about 8 times, Australia, brazil, Abu dhabi, USA, Bahrain, Korea, Japan, Singapore, India, china, Canada and about 6 other destinations throughout Europe this year.

So I figured that's alot of air miles but I have no idea of whether I would still be able to get anything with them that would be worthwhile??

If I could get a few personal experiences that would be great

Its well worth collecting.
I have a Amex charge card that i collect miles with too.

After 2 long haul flights to Asia I have enough miles for me and the wife to go to Malta return.

I have a card with British Airways that covers the One World companys and I have a BMI Diamond club card that covers Star alliance airlines.
