Delhi/Agra/Shimla in October

My Dad and I are off to India in October. Main purpose is to see the Taj Mahal, and my Dad wants to get on the train up to Shimla, having seen it on the TV.
We have lined up to see the Red Fort whilst in Agra.
What else must we see and do - and any tips to make our lives easier in India.
