Looks like I will be travelling to Moscow for a meeting, be there for possibly a day later this month on my own, and a few days in May with several colleagues/friends. Can't imagine there will be loads of time off, but any advice, things to do avoid ... places to eat/drink etc. I am quite used to travelling, but Moscow is a first.

Go and see St Basil's and GUM (although I think it's just a very upmarket shopping arcade nowadays - Like a historic Westfield!) and do a tour of the Kremlin.

All I can advise on as, when I went, there was nothing to do at night, sure that's VERY different these days!

The Kremlin is quite magnificent, and not the sinister looking place of reputation. Obviously Red Square is a must. GUM very overrated. Lots of expensive Western merchandize. The best resto I ate in was Pushkin. Very expensive but beautiful and excellent food.
Watch for taxis - very unrelable and they will rip you off. Take the subway and stop at the imcredible stations. Most elaborate in the world.
Walk the Arbat and keep your wallet close. Lots of pickpockets.

Agree with St Basils and Red square... excellent. Goodmans is great for Steak... fillet mignon...
You can see Lenin for free in red square, but don´t go to Gorky park... it´s not great. Metro is incredible

Remarkable Underground system. Cheap, Rapid,Frequent, stations are amazing (See pics from earlier)
THE most difficult city to navigate around I've been to (Never been to Tokyo mind)
The problem I found was that there is absolutely no English translations at all in the underground. The signs are entirely in cyrillic script and like our own there are lower/higher case and very different fonts so you cannot decipher them. Every station is an architectural masterpiece but they all look identical, all have identical platforms that could go in either direction and the name of station is signposted only in huge letters (Cyrillic of course) on the wall opposite the platform. The problem with that being that you can't see that from inside the train! The driver announces the name of the station as you come into it which is bugger all use to an English speaker, its not like "Compare the Meerkats" biggrin The method is to work out how many stops and count carefully. thats fine unless you get talking and lose track. Then trying to work out where you are and which way is which is a pain in the bum.
Its a majestic city on a scale similar to London or Paris but there's nothing like the infrastructure of restaurants and bars that a modern large western city would have.

Thank you chaps, especially for the Pics, I would have never thought of the Metro, but will definitely give it a go ... I have been to Tokyo a few times, so have encountered the counting stations routine.

It looks an amazing City, quite looking forward to it.

Oh, and the best looking female population I've ever seen, You'll spend most of your time with your mouth open like some sort of guppy if my experience is anything to go by.

Use the underground , but heres a tip , get a Russian version of the metro map , not an english translated version they often have in Hotels,

because as posted the letters will be cyrillic which you can compare on the Russian version with the map and it makes sense , you will be lost with a translated version !!

If you want an English pint visit John bulls , next to Solemskya tube station ......its pricy mind ,

If you want a really good restaurant , visit 1000 nights its on a boat on the river

or for clubs
