3 month contract in Thailand.
Discussion
Hi all,
Just looking for advice, I've just got a 3 month contract in Thailand, startinf next week.
I'll be staying in an apartment in Sathorn and working as a surveyor/loss adjuster covering damage caused by last years floods.
Clothing wise, I'm thinking of just taking a few short sleeeve cotton shirts and perhaps 2 pairs of chinos, or lightweight hiking trousers, I imagine I can pick up other bits and bobs when I'm over there.
Looking for any little tips, experiences etc that would help me out, I've never been to Asia before so I'm half excited and a little bit nervous.
Cheers.

Clothes wise, you'll be able to buy everything you could ever need in Bangkok.
It will be pretty warm and humid most of the time I'd have thought.
There are plenty of cool things to do in Bangkok; floating markets, palaces and temples by the river, huge shopping malls, and of course ping pong shows.
I'd head out of town to Ayutthaya and also some of the beaches a couple of hours south of the city.

I'm here at the moment and it's bloody hot! As the months go on it will get more and more humid and wetter but still as hot.
Expect flooding from June/July onwards.
Traffic in Bangkok is a nightmare, it's not unusual to take three to four hours to get across the city.
Air quality is crap in Bangkok
They drive like nutters, a motorbike taxi in rush hour is the scariest thing I have ever done.
You can get everything here, from high end fashion to cheap as chips copies of anything, there's even Tesco's
The Thai's can't tell the truth if their life depended on it, I think it's against their religion or something.
Best advice I was ever given - "It will fascinate you and annoy you in equal measures" When your on form it's funny, when you tierd/hungover it will drive you mad.
The women are known as smiling assassins for a good reason.
You will love it!

Pretty much as said above.
Head for Chatuchak market in the early part of your stay.
You can buy all the clothing you need right there.
Paragon/MBK etc are for the true branded stuff.
Make sure that you venture out of BKK.
Flights can be cheap and you are in striking distance of Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam to name a few.
Within Thailand, hit some of the better islands for a long weekend.
BKK is full of things to do and see.
Some great high end hotels for dining, street food and markets for every day, sightseeing, take a V8 long tail along the klongs, palaces, wats, etc etc it goes on.
If you say what your interests are, I can be more specific.

Guys, thanks for all your helpful replies, I'm going to be working 6 day weeks for 12 wks, so don't expect to have a huge amount of spare time.
With regards to things like t shirts, shorts etc, I'm thinking of just taking a slack handful and then stocking up when I'm there, I presume that clothing etc will be pretty cheap.

I did a few assignments to Thailand, and I buy what I need there, try to get your laundry allowance in cash, hotel rates are high but the laundry shop is cheap, (my current weekly laundry bill in Malaysia is 1.50pounds, one shirt in the Hotel is 1.80 pounds) so you can ask for 25 pound a weekly laundry allowance, then use it to buy clothes.
you can buy anything in bangkok & i mean anything lol the thai people are very friendly by nature, you will only really need t shirts shorts & flipflops its hot! kao san road is where all the travellers hang out, take a ride in a tuk tuk its good fun (& cheap)if you get the chance to go to the islands head for koh phi phi don {on the andaman coast) & take a trip across in a long tail boat to koh phi phi leh where they made the movie the beach, in the gulf of thailand i would recommend koh samui but not koh panghan (its full of stoned kids) hope you have a fantastic time
