I would like to take my better half over to the Peak District this weekend, I was wondering if anyone would be able to give me some advice on places to stay, places to avoid and things to do.

Would probably be looking at staying Friday and Saturday nights with the idea of getting a bit of walking in along with some rest and relaxation.

Any advice would be great!

Bakewell is a nice town and well located for other parts of the Peak District.

Castleton is pretty good, especially of you feel like going underground...

Chatsworth House (nr. Bakewell) is fairly stunning too

(BTW, I know you mean Peak District)

Castleton would get my vote as well. But you might be more limited by availability if you haven't booked yet.

Thorpe Cloud will test you (but not too much) it's near Dovedale in the White Peak, try to grab lunch at the George Inn in Astonfield, although you may have to book, proper pub with good beer and food. nearby you can hire bikes or walk the Manifold Valley (easy) or the Tissington Trail. Ashbourne is the main town and worth a wander for a couple of hours, but more serious walking in the North or Black Peak, worthwhile getting a guide book, as I'm sure you'll go back. Another great food an ale pub is the Druid Inn, can't remember the name of the village but it's south of Bakewell on the Ashbourne Road, brown signs and locals will know it, IMHO better than the George. PS It will rain.

Are you looking for a hotel or B&B?

Top end - Fischers @ Baslow (Michelin star), Peacock or East Lodge @ Rowsley (AA stars, all v. close to Chatsworth.

Lower down - Edale YHA, next door to Kinder Scout.

Hayfield has always struck me as a nice place, three or four pubs, couple of b&bs, and if your into walking you can do kinder from there on foot, or have a gentle meander up lantern pike.

there are loads of free maps on line

whenever i need to get my head clear i go up there and take the dog for a good stroll
theres a lovely little church right by the river,
it will always be a special place for us.

infact might even go this weekend with the dog.

Would you mind posting them up when you get them, I'm always looking for new walks up there.

Where have you booked?

Just to add Chatsworth House + gardens is shut until 11 March but its still worth a drive that way and a walk along the river. Maybe pop into the garden centre or farm shop.

If you are close to Rowsley the Peacock is fantastic but expensive.

Another good pub which is more reasonable is the Derwentwater arms in Calver.
