Its our first mini holiday away since our now 14 year old son was born. The inlaws are reluctantly looking after our three boys from Friday to Sunday so we're off to London for 3 days/two nights.

Can anyone suggest some nice hotels close to the action, online prices seem to be around the £140 mark per night.

We're also looking for places to eat during the daytime/evening.

Hotels in London are expensive. Check out the royal horseguards - 5* but reasonably priced for the location and quality. Book direct shouldn't be too bad.

It's an alternative to a hotel but, to all intents & purposes is a hotel. Makes No 8 in the trip Advisor list of romantic places to stay in London and can be had for less than £200/night which is a bargain given the standard of the place. NB No's 1 to 7 on the list were all way, way more expensive.

Then look at their "secret hotels".

Used the last minute.com secret hotels. We ended up in the Grange Hoburn. Very nice, 5*, great for tube and train. Can walk into the touristy areas if it's nice. We got a free upgrade as well.

Perfect, but £212 is too steep. May give them a call anyway.

Why not stay out at Greenwich?

Reasonable priced hotel below (we paid £75 per double plus breakfast)plus loads of different bars/restaurants to try. Also Greenwich Meridian; Maritime Museum; Cutty Sark (from the outside anyway); Greenwich market; etc etc.

Fast ferry up and down the river is very reasonable (and fun) plus you are linked to the rail/tube network.

We stayed there for a couple of nights between Xmas and NY and will definately stay there again next tme we are up in the smoke yes

Have a look at some of the theatre breaks, it might work out cheaper to have a theatre evening and tack on an extra day
