I'm trying to book a hotel in Germany and they want a cheque for 75 Euros as deposit. I can't pay by card or by cash.

How do I send a cheque in Euros from a UK bank account? Is it as simple as "Pay xxx the sum of xxxx Euros only"?

Doesn't the hotel do something sensible like using PayPal?

No, still very much stuck in the dark ages.

Looks like I'm going to have to get my bank to write a cheque in Euros for me.

We took a deposit from an Irish family for our house in France. They had to pay a small fortune to pay us (French account) via a bank transfer banghead

Could you send 75 euro by post recorded delivery or tracked?

I used to pay US $ by writing the appropriate information on a business cheque drawn on a UK bank. They always went through without any bother. The exchange rate was, of course, something for which you were at the mercy of the bank.

This was in the 1980s. Can't think of any reason why it wouldn't work now, but the person you're paying would obviously have to wait a long time for confirmation of clearing.
