Not found one yet, The Train Line in my experience is no cheaper than going direct through the operator and they charge a booking fee.

Agreed, in my experience the battle between sites largely boils down to which one gives the user the most agreeable user friendly way to sift through all the options and settle on the route, timing of journey and flexibility of ticket which best suits their needs.

Have yet to find one which is a one stop shop where the possibilities cannot be improved with a bit of judicious juggling of start / end points and breaking the journey down into smaller bites, thus removing the need to "change at Smethwick, arr 9.46, dep 9.50" or similar ambitious plan.

Sorry for a thread diversion but what is missing in the market is a system similar to what used to be available in Sweden is a cross-modal journey planner, though the uk journey planner comes closest, perhaps I am expecting too much.

Prior to our version of transport privatisation one had a one stop website, start and finish street addresses all that was needed, and it would come up with a cornucopia of options using various combinations of walking, taxi, bus, rail, ferry, with consideration of more than just one access point to the rail network.

In UK from my house I could easily use 5 railway stations to start a jpurney, this ignores the physically nearest which is largely a tiny commuter halt, and to be fair one possibly two of the remaining five are simply the next station along a line. So let's say choice of three start points.

Dependant upon which start point one chooses the planners send via wierd and wonderful routings, yet break the journey down via the obvious interchange points and the composite journey often becomes far more simple, the end price is often the same.

Maybe it's just me that inhabits a Bermuda Triangle of train complication.

No such thing. They can be helpful in playing about with different travel times though, and seeing how that impacts on the price.

Often the cheapest fare can be had by booking (the whole journey) through the website of the train company who'll be providing the largest part of the journey.

What journey are you planning on making?

Watch out sometimes 2 * singles can be a cheaper option than a standard return, also checkout the price of 1st class as these can be picked up cheaply occasionally

As above really, they all sell the same product, but in different ways.

Often the cheapest site is the one without a credit card fee irked

No such site.

Even working for Network Rail I get no discounts whatsoever.

You best bet is to book well in advance.

If thats not possible try an get some sort of travelcard.

If you are traveling withing the same reigon regulally, the different train companies often offer an area dicount card.

I've used redspottedhanky.com in the past and found them to be cheap.

There isnt a booking fee and they take tesco vouchers too - from memory at a 2 times rate (I.e £10 tesco voucher = £20 off your rail ticket)
