AFAIK there are two types - both available from ASDA for £1.50 each.

Get a Swiss Air travel adapter with the optional USB charger. Slightly bigger than some, but gives you the option of plugging in a standard UK 3 pin plug OR a USB cable. If you're taking lots of gadgets (camera, phone, mp3 player, kindle, etc...) then you can leave most of those chargers behind and just take the USB cables that you need

I came across this a while ago:

... and promptly made one! The relevant leads to plug into it are very easily found when abroad (and if you have bought a printer or computer recently you may well find that it is supplied with all the leads you are ever likely to need! My last printer came with a European and US lead, which covers the vast majority of places I'm likely to travel to.)
Oli.

It really depends what you are powering. If it is just electronics, a small adaptor is ideal, if for some reason you are travelling with a hairdryer, iron or portable VCR you would need to worry about voltage and frequencies. If you are going anywhere far afield, 110v may cause an issue, look on the back of devices and see if they accept 110-240v 50-60Hz, if they do they work anywhere. If not they might go bang or smell weird after a few mins. If you are going to China, go to an electronics store and buy the correct chargers for about £1 each. A 2 pin euro style plug will work in most countries, often sockets accept multiple plugs anyway.
where are you headed and what electronics are you taking with you?
I've just got back / am in the middle of (depending on which way you look at it) from travelling around for 11months and found the huge adaptors people have cause loads of grief in that they don't stay in the walls, don't give good connections and mine broke easily. I ended up throwing mine away along with the UK cables and buying new versions locally - I was carrying a laptop cable (mickey mouse) and a figure-of-eight. The actual plug ends were these : http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/ae...
I found those cables worked all through Ecuador, Central America and the States (I would presume other destinations in South America as well, but I replaced the adaptor in Ecuador and flew from Quito). In S.E. Asia, I bought a local cable to convert back to the UK adaptor and this combination worked in Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore and sometimes in Thailand. In Oz, I had to buy cables again as they have a completely different plug.
Cables were dirt cheap to replace / adaptors on the road were easy to come by...
Some people carried power strips with them, but apart from the hostel in Oz I stayed in where there was 2 sockets for the 8 bed dorm, I never had need.
The point about power, I didn't have any trouble anywhere as my laptop charger was 110/240V as was the camera charger...
Have fun wherever you go! I had / am having an absolute blast!

Thanks, can't wait! Glad to hear you are enjoying it.
I am taking an iPad, camera and phone.
Starting off in Russia taking the Trans Siberian express through Mongolia to China. Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, India, Nepal, S.E Asia, NZ, south pacific, south America and central America. Take it as it comes. Well that is the plan at least!
I think I'll look into buying local adapters possibly also if needed on the go.
