Yup! But only out in the sticks.
I did a desert trek once in the Negev, which was just amazing. Camels, 4x4's, camping out under the stars etc.
There's some remarkable scenery to be experienced in Israel. The Ramon Crater is a good example of what it can be like - http://www.touristisrael.com/the-ramon-crater-makh...
It's a relatively small country, so the historical city areas are actually not that far away. I didn't get to see them on that trip, but have every intention to go back and check out that side of things one day.
Definitely worth going if you have the chance. It's a small (ish) place but with a surprisingly large range of things to do and see.

Went once years ago a week touring about, Tel aviv, Gallilee, up north, dead sea & masada, west bank to bethlehem & jerusalem, I'm not really religious but it was a fantastic trip with loads of variety & history I'd love to go again. Defo recommend going if you get the chance, Jerusalem is one manic place so much going on in a small area.
Then did a week own Eilat, plenty do do for a week & pretty cosmoplitan.
Not sure what it's like now but the Isreali's had no qualms about having 'heavy' security all over the place
Which bit you going you ?

Traveled there on business a few times and parents lived there in the diplomatic community. Previous threads here...

Read the short one above - the one linked within that has all the recommendations, etc.

I have been several times on business, getting through the airport can be an absolute nightmare, getting back out again is even worse so allow plenty of time (like 4 hours). People you meet will either be fantastic and very welcoming or some of the most ignorant/arrogant assholes ever. Just my personal experience.

I've only been once, but I never understood the comments about the airport at least at Tel Aviv.Arriving at Tel Aviv expect to be asked questions about what you're doing there and I have been told it's a good idea if going on business to have the contact numbers of who you're going to see so they can check if needed, probably the same if you're staying with friends. I was also told to have a letter of introduction, however I didn't have one and when asked if I did they didn't mind.
Leaving was more fun, as soon as you arrive at the airport, you will join a queue for your hold luggage to be scanned and you will be asked questions about what you were doing in Israel. I also had my bag searched which took about 10 mins again, they were polite and it really wasn't a big deal. Also for the trouble (delay) they escorted me to the front of the check-in line so I didn't have to wait again. Then you go through the same process again for your carry on luggage. It was scanned, then searched by hand and they were all polite and friendly.
I left thinking I'd happily go back and it's actually better than at Heathrow or any of the US airports I've been too as there is a sense that the security actually would work. It's also taken me longer to get through Heathrow a number of times than all of the above took at Tel Aviv however as above you need to be at the airport no less than 3 hours before your flight.
If you have anything to hide Israel isn't a good place to visit, however myself and all of my colleagues that have travelled there all came away with pretty much the same feelings and we weren't all travelling at the same time / day. I'll be going back as soon as there is a reason.
Hi guys,
Thanks for the helpful posts - I really appreciate it.
As for where I'll be going? Wherever my tour guide takes me (not an actual tour guide, but a very good friend who lived in Israel for many years - she's also Jewish)
Really looking forward to the trip. I may be there for a month or so, so plenty of time to see the sights, etc
Cheers,
C.
