Quick question - looking on the Hertz site, it's a lot cheaper to hire a car on the French side than the Swiss, but we are holidaying in Switzerland. Does it really make any difference?

the car on the Swiss side will come with the Swiss motorway "vignette" which will otherwise cost you 45chf. The French side is also a little difficult to access and will involve some nifty map-reading, otherwise no.

What time of year? Swiss cars also have to have winter tyres etc by law in the winter months. In any case as for the reasons mentioned above go Swiss side if at all possible!

I always find the French side to be much cheaper although it can be a pain dragging stuff from one side of the airport to another.

I think you can buy the swiss tax disk on ebay sometimes? Might be worth a look?

they are supposed to be non-transferrable and are made from plastic that deforms when it is removed from the screen. So any you get on ebay will probably be knackered and unusable. 45chf is only £22-23 anyway.

None on eBay I can see anyway. It's £29 from Swiss travel - www.stc.co.uk

We're doing the same as you. Flying to Geneva in June to drive to France. Every time I've checked it's been slightly cheaper and easier to rent the car on the Swiss side of the airport.
I book through auto-europe.co.uk and have a Hertz car at a discount. Always works for me!

just remember to follow the correct signs on the return, as if you return the car to the wrong side you will be paying considerably for the mistake
