Normandy to Nice

Can anyone recommend a good place to stop over and break the journey from Lassay-les-Chateaux in Normandy to Nice. I've done this journey once before and made the mistake of stopping in Vichy. It was like being in a French remake of Cocoon.

1 night for a couple with no kids. Idealy some where we can have a stroll out for a nice meal in nice surroundings.

How about Clermont Ferrand? Roughly half-way, and nothing like Vichy!

What's Clermont Ferrand like? I always thought it was a bit industrial. Don't know why though.

It is, but the centre is quite nice.

The area out of the centre called Chamalières is very pleasant and This hotel is quite pleasant with a nice restaurant.
