Hi All
Just wanted a bit of advice on my trip to the beautiful LOS in August.
My itinerary is as follows:
3 days in Kualar Lumpur
5 days in Samui – North Chaweng Beach
4 days Kohphangan – Haad Salad
2 days Bangkok
Just have a few queries, I’ve been told that the beach isn’t great in north Chaweng as it’s quite difficult to swim as it’s shallow and a bit dirty. I was thinking of visiting south Chaweng beach in the day even though our hotel is in the north. Are there public sun loungers there or is it a case of putting your towel on the sand and claiming your spot that way?
Also in KL am I able to purchase tickets in advance as I don’t fancy queuing up at 8 am in the morning when I may not even get a ticket for that day.
Is street food readily available as it is in Bangkok on the islands of Samui and Koh Phangan?
No questions on Bangkok as I’ve been there before.
I’d appreciate you input on this as want to be well prepared for our next trip.
Many thanks, Michael

I can help with regard to Samui.
You're right, the beach at the north end is not the best. It's sheltered by a reef, which keeps some debris beach side.
The degree of debris varies. South is better for sand and swimming, although this can get very rough at certain times of year. I prefer the "feel" of the beach at the north end though.
Sunlounders - there are numerous loungers provided by the bars and hotels along the beach. If you use them, you should be a customer/resident of the establishment providing them. Always check with the hotel/bar that it's ok to use them - it will be welcomed. Buy a couple of drinks or some food and you'll be fine for the whole day.
Street/beach food is everywhere. On the beach, vendors will walk up and down, selling the regular fare - BBQ sate, chicken, fish, sweetcorn etc. Try the green pappaya salad, it's spectacular. Fresh fruit and cold drinks also available. On the street, the carts sell the same stuff that you are used to seeing in BKK.
Just ask if you need any more info.

I'm guessing you mean the Petronas towers with regards to queuing early in the morning?
If it is I was there in March and I don't think you could get them in advance, although there did seem to be very few tickets available. I would reccomend you get there a bit before 8 as well as there were people there ahead of me when I lined up at a little after 7!
Completely worth it though as they've now opened an observation platform on the 86th floor in addition to the Sky Bridge.

Thank you both for your replies, yes apologies I meant petronas towers! I'm going in August. Is the tide ok then? Is it choppy in the south if chaweng? I'm staying at iyara and cannot wait! I e made shelter that there's a fridge in the room for the cans of singha. Ahhhh!
December to August is considered the best time to visit Smui.Under normal weather patterns, the rains beging in earnest, during September. However, you will get a good degree of rain in August.
The sea should be fine for swimming in August, but on windier days, you need to take the advice of the flags on the beach. If the red flag is out - don't swim. I have seen peope drowned in the sea at south Chaweng.
Forget the Singha - Chang is the way forward. Mmmmmm.
