Backpacker accommodation? You do realise this is Pistonheads? You'll be saying next that you don't have a goatee.

I went to Langkawi and stayed at the Datai so I can't help with your question, although their Thai restaurant gave me the biggest case of the sts I've ever had, so I can't gloat too much. Enjoyed Langkawi though, even though we arrived to black skies and drizzle which was mildly depressing.

We too stayed at the Datai, beautiful beach and quality hotel.. as for your backpacking (which I did in the 80s) so its all depressingly different my advice was always to pitch up where you want to be and book somewhere for one night. Then hit your local backpack bar and ask about. Other than that buy "The lonely Planet Guide 2012"
