Don't know that particular company but I worked for a hire company in Darwin for a while.
Can't really go wrong with those Landies and there are loads of them buzzing round Oz so spares are easy to come by. I know that may not seem to be your problem if you're renting but if there is a problem and you have to wait a week for something to arrive - you are going at the end of the wet season so perfectly possible - it's worth considering.
Also, make sure you check the small print as there are usually specific restrictions on where you can drive them. So if you're planning on doing the Canning Stock route or something, make sure you're allowed!

Well there's only really one road heading north so there's not much to say
Have you been before?
If not I'd suggest taking the the main highway because the west coast is absolutely beautiful and there's no bugger there. You can camp in the National Parks and expect to have the place pretty much to yourself. The Ningaloo Reef is behind me here:

You can go to Coral Bay and stand in the sea while the reef sharks swim right up to you:

You don't need 4x4 but there are plenty of opportunities to get off road if you want. This was near Exmouth:

I've not been to the interior of WA but have done further east and although I loved driving through the desert, there's not really much to see. This was our view for several days on the Oodnadatta Track which goes up the middle of Australia:

I'm sure the Aussies here can help out more but the main desert route in WA that I can remember is the Canning Stock Route, which I imagine will be like the above

Yeah not too bothered about taking the highway but will like the option of having a play with a landcruiser in the desert. I suppose the distance you have to travel between places of interest does make the highways seem like a good idea but a couple of days here and there on the tracks also sounds like fun!
