Hello Pistonheads,

Me and my other half have decided to do a little UK road trip as we cant afford to leave the country this year so we are going to be taking 1 - 2 weeks of going around the UK around October.

My other half is making a list of the places that she wants to go too, such a Lands-end/John'o'grouts and other places like this.

What I thought that you guys would be able to help with is ideas of places to go and see and things to go and do in the UK. My other half isn't too interested in cars (don't hate shes lovely just a typical member of the other sex) so a wide variety of places/landmarks and such would be greatly appreciated. I would also appreciate some really nice roads and scenery to go past also, so any recommendations would be fantastic.

Thanks in advance

Mike

Not sure of the sort of thing you're looking for - Visiting towns, walking in the middle of nowhere etc.

Some of my favourite places in the UK are Northumberland coast, North Cornwall coast, Scottish Highlands. Also there are some decent drives to be had in those areas, especially if you go north and away from crowds in Cornwall, which should be ok in October anyway. Can't give too many town/city recommendations but I think York & Edinburgh are worth a visit if you're heading that way.

Hmm, am in the Lake District in a few weeks. Anyone know how long it takes to get to Ribblehead from the M6?

Making sure, of course, that one enjoys the A4069 and the roads around the Elan Valley.

Come off at Junction 36 (southbound) and head for Ingleton, then turn left through the village and follow the signs for Hawes.

It is about 25 minutes drive to the viaduct after you have left the M6. On the drive up from Ingleton you will pass Whernside (on the left) and Ingleborough (on the right) two of the famous Yorkshire Three Peaks.

25 mins, not too far then, cheers!

So much to see and so many options. My favourite areas of England are Cornwall, South-East Kent, Cumbria and Northumberland.

Suffice to say if I was visiting Cornwall Lands End wouldn't be on my list! It is a tacky theme park type affair that try's to charge you money for photos by the famous sign. If you do go dont pay the £10, just stand a few yards in front of it and get a fellow tourist to take a snap!. Everything that is wrong with modern society is highlighted by this awful place! Speaking of places in Cornwall not to visit I would also stay away from Newquay unless you happen to be a teenage Magaluf regular! My favourites in Cornwall are Kynance Cove, Minack Theatre-an evening performance of anything with the sun setting on a nice evening is sensational, Sennen Cove, St Ives, Padstow, Port Isaac/Port Gaverne(aside from the Doc Marten fans), Gwithian Beach/Towans and Godrevy Lighthouse walk(Seal spotting or have a try at surfing in one of the numerous Surf Schools,Tintagel worth a look for the romance of the place, St Michaels Mount, Mousehole and Mevagissey are quintessential Cornish Fishing Villages, Healeys Cider Farm to stock up with cider and bag a cream tea whilst you're at it.

Other spectacular places that are my favourites in UK are Holy Island in Northumberland- the island is only accesible by car when tide is low via causeway, Bamburgh Castle and a boat trip round the Farne Islands. Hadrians Wall central section. Nice towns Corbridge, Barnard Castle,

Lake District all areas-just stay away from Windermere during summer season( the only place foreign tourists tours head). I particularly like the area around Grasmere (visit the Gingerbread shop) and Ambleside and am determined to visit the Bluebird/Donald Campbell museum at Conniston. / Wasdale Head an authentic Lakeland area. Carmel in the south for the Sticky Toffee Pudding shop, but you can pick one up elsewhere.

Forest of Bowland in Lancashire is beautiful area, I would stay at The Inn at Whitewell or The Gibbon Bridge Hotel.

Whitby in North Yorkshire is a much better bet than Scarborough. Gothic ruins overlooking the town.

Add to this Avebury, The White Horse and Silbury Hill - lovely part of the world and some cracking pubs around there as well. These places are great - a real sense of other-worldlyness - you can feel the history. For me anyway.
