I understand the proliferation of these threads on General Gassing is not to everyone's taste, so apologies if you've previously contributed to a similar conversation -

My wife and I, plus 2 dogs and a baby will be driving down to Andalucia (near Malaga) in September for a week in the sun. Any suggestions on an interesting route or place to stop for the night, or lunch, along the way?

We will be taking three whole days to drive down (once we arrive at Caen) and three on the way back.

Cheers

My advice- leave France as quickly as possible. Spain is cheaper, has better roads from a policing point of view and isn't full of french people.

Good place to stop: San Sebastian/Donostia.

I'm doing the same run mid August.
I was going to stay in Caen but my plans are not fixed yet.
Was thinking of the following.
I'm taking 6 days to drive down the east / central France stopping in Maidstone, Luxemburgh, Avignon, Barcelona and Valencia. = ca. 1800 miles
Return will be west side of France stopping of in Madrid, San Sebastian, Bordeaux, Versailles, and Canterbury. = ca. 1600 miles

San Sebastian is a very nice town to spend an evening in.

We're thinking of something very similar to your route - Caen, La Rochelle, Biarritz, Toledo, Malaga - might change Biarritz to San Sebasatian based on your recommendation

On way back we are thinking - Valencia, Montpellier, Bourges (via Millau), Alencon then home..

For your way back have a look at the parador at Sos Del Ray Catolico which is in Northern Spain and in a medieval stone town perched on a hill. That also leads you on towards the Pyrenees and one of the passes through the Pyrenees National Park.

Amazing food and wine as well. A chance to try some real 'tapas' culture.

Cheaper than Biarritz, less stuffy, in fact better in every way.

Was also thinking of Biarritz as never been. Maybe a stop for lunch.
Stopped in Montpellier last year. There was a wine festival going on but I rained hard all evening.
Good luck.
