Car choice for Vegas - 'Frisco road trip
Discussion
Going on honeymoon in September, a road trip from Vegas to San Francisco. We currently have a medium sized generic hatch/saloon type thing booked, with aircon.
No doubt it will be dull to drive, so should we upgrade to something more interesting ?
I have been told that the novelty of a convertible wears off after 20 mins in the desert, but what about something with a bit more character ? (maybe I mean cylinders)
I don't think we'll be doing this again anytime soon, so keen to make the most of it.

We did a similar trip in 2010 and despite my initial excitement at the thought of a V8, we went for a mid-sized SUV in the end. It was a Ford 4x4 something-or-other.
Never regretted it, particularly when we could sling all our stuff in the back with ease and take it off road in Death Valley. We would never have seen some of the amazing places in the area if we diddnt have a 4x4.

We did LA -> LV -> SF -> LA -> last year and had a brand new Jeep Grand Cherokee from Alamo.
We did 3,500 miles in 17 days and it was great. Not the most exciting car but it was very comfortable, big enough for carting all our luggage for the two week road trip, and fast enough for the freeways. It was also great fun going through Titus Canyon in Death Valley, which would not have been possible in a non 4x4.

I drove Hwy 1 from LA to SF then onto Yosemite, Sequoia, Vegas and back to LA a couple of years ago with Mrs. Crutch, we had a V6 Mustang convertible and IMO it was the perfect car for the trip. The softtop was down for a very large part of the journey including through the desert, the Mustang was by no means a sports car but generally it suited the road we drove rather well. We looked at a Corevtte convertible at the rental yard but the luggage space in one is tiny and realistically not going to work for a honeymooning couple. Have driven that trip several times. It is still hot in September so you may not get full use of top down driving in Death Valley portion of trip but you have quite a bit more beyond that would be great for open top. I enjoyed off roading in Disco III in Death Valley and interior space made for no worries on packing. I have also taken numerous day (actually, mostly night) trips through Death Valley in both Aston Martin V8 Vantage then later, DBS.
Both ends of automotive spectrum fun in their own in this location.

This, drove from miami to vegas via everywhere in one. It handles poorly and turns like an ocean liner but fold back the passenger carpet, take out the butterfly valve fuse so the exhaust is on full chat all the tmie and let the bI mean - you may as well eh?
