Me and OH are in London next week for a morning Olympics event. Finishes at lunch time so I'll have a paid up zone 1-9 travel card and an afternoon to spend doing things before getting the train home.

I've booked to go on the London Eye, but what else would me and the Mrs want to do in London in an afternoon?

Take the boat from Waterloo to Greenwich, and have a wander around there. There's the naval college, then you can take the new cable car up to the royal observatory. The Southbank between Waterloo and Blackfriars bridge is also well worth exploring.

If you're going on The Eye it is worth going into the Aquarium at the base, it's great. 10mins walk is a proper London pub call the Rose and Crown on Columbo St, good food and beer(and say hi to my sister wink )

How about going to Canary Wharf and having a look at some of the superyahcts there? Probably not worth a trip just for that but if you're nearby...

Cheers for the tips.

Are there any good museums or exhibitions worth looking at?

Cable car is nowhere near the Observatory. Its at the O2 and crosses the river to near the Excel centre above a few recycling/industrial units.

National Portrait Gallery - currently lots of portraits in competition. Some amazing work.

Heatherwick at the V&A - but it is about £15 each.

Boat trip on Thames is always intresting

Ok cool.

Well you can jump on the Jubilee Line to Canning Town, switch to the DLR taht goes to either Beckton or Prince Regent, get off at the first stop which puts you just behind the Cable Car.

Take the Cable Car to the O2. You can now take a walk over the O2 on a special walkway, which could be good for pics etc. When you're done there, find the Thames Clipper pier ad jump on a boat to Greenwich (or all the way to the London Eye if you wish). If you stop at Greenwich you have the newly renovated Cutty Sark, the National Maritime Museum and the Observatory all pretty close by. Not sure how easy access is to Greenwich Park where the Observatory is due to it being an Olympic venue.

When you're done there, jump back on any tourist boat to come into central London (or back on a Thames Clipper which is much faster). Clipper will take you straight to the Eye at Waterloo Pier.

After the Eye you can take a long stroll back along the the South Bank towards Tower Bridge, the Tate Modern, Vinopolis, The Clink, London Dungeons and HMS Belfast are all along that route. There's also tours of Tower Bridge if there's any space left.

OR

get off the boat at the Tower of London pier straight after Tower Bridge, have a look around the Tower of London, cross over Tower Bridge to the South side and do the walk in reverse upto the London Eye.

After the Eye you can cross over Westminster Bridge for pics of Big Ben, turn right into Whitehall and go all the way upto Trafalgar Sq for the National Portrait gallery.

Then find somewhere to eat!!

OR you can turn left off Whitehall into Horse Guards Parade where the beach volleyball is taking place, ;-) I think you can still walk through despite he grandstands, behind HGP is St James Park, which takes you up to Buck Palace. You can then walk back down the Mall towards Trafalgar Sq for National Portrait as above.

Thank heavens for that - was only there a few weeks ago and puffed my unfit frame up the bleedin' hill, would have been a bit gutted if there was a motorised form of transport.

Which reminds me, meant to ask you Steve (as you seem to be our resident tour guide) When we were at the observatory, I saw cars parked up there - any idea how to get to that bit?

Hey Mark!
Yeah I sneakily didnt tell you about the easy up there!! ;-)

The access to the main car park is from the south side of the Park where it meets Blackheath. Charlton Way I think.

furious

biggrin

It's actually a nice walk from the bottom and see the east end come in to view as you go up. Plus we got to see the Equestrian Arena being built - closest I'll get to the Olympics!

Do the country a favour and take some bin liners and chuck any rubbish you see in them.

I think London will be covered with litter after the
games.

Oh yeah, then enjoy, hope you have a good stay.

Both the Natural History Museum & the Saatchi Gallery have interesting and FREE exhibits on just now, which I rather enjoyed last weekend.

If you fancy something a bit different, Sir John Soane's house is excellent.

Nearest tube Chancery Lane, one of the best London museums imho.
