Assuming you re staying in Puerto del Carmen so here s my suggestion.
Hire a car, it will be cheap and petrol is very cheap. Cost for a week is about double what your taxi from the airport and return will cost so its effective. I use argus rent a car.
No real gourmet food places but pleasent places just up from the harbour in the old town.
Hire a mountain bike, there s a german guy half way down the main strip, he s behind a small shopping mall.
It s not a bad island at all, Some stunning scenery on north west coast, Guinate and Mirador del rio .
Tourist market sunday morning in Teguise.

Don't walk barefooted ont the sand if your going to Puerto del Carmen , As said above a car is a must , get inland the beach front bars are just too english
Nothing wrong with the beach at the Los Pocilos end of town? Just avoid the centre. This restaurant is very nice IMO:

As has been said, hire a car, head inland and then take the road up the west coast to Mirador del Rio, it's a belter. Just watch out for cyclists on the blind hairpins!
Defo hire a car - we used Cabrera Medina; decent price
Food wise bit hit and miss, we usually went for something neat the harbour in the old town. Here are some suggestions :
Kristians
TJs
(both on Calle Tiede just behind harbour)
Timanfaya is worth a visit - pretty amazing landscape and some swift roads to try out the rental car on, just watch out for the Guard Civil
Teguise market - felt it was a bit a non-event - lots of stalls but mostly selling same stuff / crap. Great wee town and worth visit. Main market is on the Sunday.
There are some fab beaches in the up by Arrietta and Escamas (take the Lz-1)
