Driving on my own (to a funeral) - from London to Kendal

Any non depressing recommendations in between those two places? (don't really think I can face a motorway Premier Inn or similar)

Think i might just fire all the way to Kendal then at least the morning will be nice?

Midland Hotel in Morecambe is a nice art-deco hotel.
Kirkby Lonsdale isn't far from Kendal and is nice too.

Why are you stopping?

I commute that every Monday/Friday!

If it is because you wont necessarily have accomodation in Kendal, try The Swan hotel in Newby Bridge.

I live in London and my family live near Kendal - if I ever travel up without the wife/kids I NEVER drive.

I think it's under three hours from Euston to Oxenholme (edge of Kendal) on the train, Virgin First Class is better than most (decent wifi, reasonable food and a few free glasses of wine). Far less stressful than a drive that's taken up to 9 hours in the past.

edited to say there are local car hire firms who should be able to collect you from Oxenholme, and it's actually 2 hours 40 minutes journey time...

Thirded, food is fantastic. Make sure you sit in the bar as the dining room lacks a bit of atmosphere. Has a great little shop attached to it as well.
