City break to Barcelona early 2013
Discussion
I can fully recommend the Hotel Torre Catalunya. I stayed there in 2008 and it was very reasonably priced. The rooms are a decent size too and there's an excellent bar on the top floor with some cracking views of the city. It's located right beside the central train station and has a metro station next to it so everywhere is easy to get to.

If you do book it, don't bother with the breakfast-there's a cafe across the road that does decent coffee and pastries that will set you up for the day!

Can only add to above.
We stayed at the same hotel last October, smashing place, breakfast wasn't too bad, but indeed there are plenty of eateries around if you choose.
Also bang opposite the bus station where you can get on a hop on, hop off type service, well worth it, means you can see Barca from above rather than a tube.
Couple of eateries

View from the top floor, radiating lights are the Sagrada Falmilia on the other side of the city.

6th floor apartment, deck balcony overlooking old square, minutes walk from port, beach and old quarter, funky bathroom/bedroom, glass roof - just an interesting place and very easy.

Wife and I went to Barcelona for 5 nights in mid March 2011. It was nice and sunny but COLD!
We stayed at the Hotel Montecarlo which is located at the top of Las Ramblas close to Playa Cataluna, so perfectly located for this short trip. The hotel was very good. We booked a double and got a mini suite, really nice. The hotel has a restaurant for breakfast only. There are loads of restaurants near by.
Las Ramblas is rather touristy but OK. We did not see any of the reported regular pick pocketing. The main market in Las Ramblas is as a teriffic place to visit and it's a couple of minutes from the hotel.
Being near Barcelona's main playa and main transport hub is really convenient. You can get a bus from the airport to the playa and then it's a short walk to the hotel. Wife has a hip problem so we cabbed it anyway. All the tourist bus routes, there are 4, start and end in the playa.
There's loads to do in Barcelona so get yourself a good guide book before you go and work out what you want to do each day. Once thing we did on our first morning was to take the old town guided walk: excellent. It starts at the tourist office maybe 10 minutes from the hotel. Even better, we booked and paid for this online before we left the UK.
After the Basilica Familia the next most popular tourist place is Barcelona's football ground. We did not visit it but saw it while we were on the tourist bus route.
If you feel like spashing out on a good meal in a top quality restaurant, I'd suggest the Restaurant Six Portes (I think that's the correct spelling!) near the marina. It's 150 years old, large but arranged in small rooms and does great food. I strongly suggest you book and this let's you jump the queue outside!
Hope this helps you.

Segway tour is brilliant! Edgar the guide was very good and made it an even more fun experience, we did a drag strip style race on the pier!
