Mobile phone for USA trip

Hi,
Wondered if anyone around here knew the best way to get a mobile setup for the USA? Previously I've bought pre pay GoPhone SIMs and gone for the $2 a day deal where you can get unlimited calls to USA numbers.
Is this still the best approach (assuming they still do it!)? I wouldn't mind a bit of included data this time, which is one thing the GoPhone setup lacked.

Whatever you do - ensure you have a UK phones Data turned OFF.
OH and I were there last year or year before. She didn't "use" the data, but just the dribble of incoming email, and it updating itself caused a bill in 5 days that was the same as the flights !
Oof, yeah I've heard stories like that from friends. The Roaming data option will be set to off and triple checked! OH and I were there last year or year before.
