thailand as a honeymoon destination
Discussion
friends of mine are considering thailand for their honeymoon. They looked into it and said they were considering patong. I've been to thailand a couple of times so thought i would interject, primarily to advise them to avoid there at all costs. Now I've bought myself the responsibility to come up with some alternatives, bearing in mind they want a lovely hotel not too far away from places they can go in the evening if they so choose. I would hope not too seedy. I suggested ko samui, but i have heard ko lanta and ko lipe are also very nice but don't know too much about them. Suggestions please!
The Racha is indeed a splendid suggestion.
However, the bay there can get VERY busy during the day with the influx of day trippers - a bit like Phi Phi. Also, the floating jetty can be a nightmare when arriving and departing. So much so, it resulted in a helicopter rescue for one of our group at Christmas.
It very much depends on the time of year.
In my opinion, places that should be considered are:-
Phuket.
Mom Tri's Boat Boat House.
Mom Tri's Royal Villa.
Le Meridien.
Banyan Tree and others at Laguna.
Koh Samui.
The Tongsai Bay.
Anantara.
The W.
Poppies.
Amari
Koh Chang.
Buddha View
Amari
Koh Kood.
Soneva Kiri
Krabi
the Rayavadee
These hotels pretty much cover the whole budget spectrum and i suggest them for differing reasons. Some are smaller places, others huge. Pays your money etc... The Kiri is the "no expense spared". A 2 centre would be a great option. Some offer more than others in terms of options outside of the hotel.

Indigo Pearl.
Close enough to the airport that you won't waste hours of your honeymoon in a lunatic taxi. Beautiful resort with a several pools and a few very decent restaurants to eat in. Amazing breakfast.
And best of all, some lovely cheap fish restaurants 2 minutes away on the beach for those times you want some cheaper meals away from the hotel.

Obviously don't know their budget, but we honeymooned in Thailand - Bangkok for some culture and sights to begin, then on to Koh Samui. We stayed in Bo Phut which has some nice hotels, quite quiet, not too expensive but with the Fisherman's Village for evening eats and drinks (all sorts, but quite touristy/western rather than authentically Thai - but where is in the tourist areas?)Regiment said:
Why don't you like Thailand and why wouldn't you want someone to spend a honeymoon there?
I think he means Patong, not Thailand in General..There are some great hotels all over Thailand that can cater to what you asked for in the OP.
http://www.thepassagesamui.com/ I stayed here a couple of years ago, had a great time, the staff were wonderful, the food was great. It is nice an secluded, only 10mins away or so on a scooter.
http://phangan-rasananda.anantara.com/ Stayed here last year, north of Koh Phanang. Don't write the island off as being a party Island, there are plenty of other things to do and see. And this hotel was wonderful!!
The only places I would avoid personally are Patong (like quite a lot of Phuket these days and Bangkok. But it's all personal.
thanks everyone, i sent a load of places over to them based on this. They got back saying they had spoken to someone else who warned them off samui as it rains there all year round? Having only been to that island in wet season when clearly it was pissing it down anyway, can anyone say whether this is BS or not? Sounds like to me...
This could be one of those "people ask me for advice; then don't listen to anything i say" situations so this is for my own curiosity more than anything else.

Your friends need to talk to someone who is informed, not someone who is full of crap. This could be one of those "people ask me for advice; then don't listen to anything i say" situations so this is for my own curiosity more than anything else.
Everywhere in south east Asia has a rainy season. Some have rain all year round. Samui is not one of them.
I would suggest that Christmas is not a good time for clear skies in Samui.
Easter is usually amazing.
For goodness sake, tell them to get on Google and look at the weather charts. Then can then make their own minds up.

I would say that this info is absolute poppy cock. The person who said this is either full of sThis could be one of those "people ask me for advice; then don't listen to anything i say" situations so this is for my own curiosity more than anything else.

Unfortunately you just can't help some people...
well despite the fact i have been more than once, spent a decent amount of time there, travelled around most of the country, i guess it is just a case of only wanting to listen to advice that confirms what they already thought!Gassing Station | Holidays & Travel | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
