Midweek break, Highlands
Discussion
We're thinking of a few days in the Highlands, week commencing 22 Oct. Not too expensive (up to £100 pn), preferably with loch or sea nearby. Travelling there from Suffolk, is one day drive feasible/comfortable? We've been all over England and France/Italy, but never Scotland. Any suggestions for decent hotels welcome. Thanks.
West coast is lovely and a surprisingly good drive from the south east. Bit of a haul north of Glasgow to get to the scenic bits but I've driven to both Glasgow and Edinburgh easily in a day from Essex. Once you get out of the congestion of the south east it's easy. Can't help with hotels though - we rough camped in the van and lived off Mc Donalds, Red Bull, Tennants and Marlbro Reds for 4 days.

If you can I'd suggest breaking the journey up. Stopping in the Glasgow area even around loch lomond side...

At least then you would then be fresh the next day to enjoy the rest of the trip.
I'd advise heading up the west coast, a82 up through Glencoe up to Fort William then head west out towards Skye, you could then head up over to Applecross....

You can then stick to the coast and head north towards Ullapool via gairloch...

Depending how much time you have the roads north of Ullapool are some of the best driving roads in the world.
Enjoy,

Good advice there from Cat re the West Coast but I'm thinking that perhaps you're going to be pushed for time given that you've got to make your way up from Suffolk. Have you thought of basing yourselves in Edinburgh which is a great city for a break and perhaps driving through the fishing villages of Fife to St Andrews?
Spent a week driving around the north west in June and it was fantastic, we based ourselves in Inverness at the Kessock highland lodges.
Everywhere we drove was pretty much a 4 hour drive from here but really enjoyable, even my wife who doesn't really like driving holidays admitted that it was great. We got to about 80% of the places I wanted to visit in the 6 days we where there and in total done about 1600 miles, missed out some things but simply couldn't fit everything in. Ullapool direction was definitely my favourite, secenry and roads where out of this world.
