We are travelling to Dubai in a week or so , and when we are staying in Dubai we are travelling to Sri Lanka .

I have been told by a certain bank that Rupee's arent available in the Uk?

So is it advisable to obtain them in ..say .. Dubai?

We went to Kerala and they have exchange huts outside the airport where everyone changes money. Don't get too much as you won't need as much as you think - everything is very cheap. We changed £400 for a week and converted £200 back.

Rupees are generally not available in the UK because the Indian government does not allow the import and export of its currency by non-residents. As others have said, there are foreign exchange booths in the airports that will sort you out. Make sure you get a receipt.

I was able to pick them up in heathrow before heading to Mumbai on business, I was told to ensure that I didn't try to bring any back to the uk so I was sure to spend everything I had left in the airport.

I think the rules are that you should not bring back more than you took in, or something like that.

I may be wrong or at least picked the guy up incorrectly but I'm fairly sure he said it was an offence to take any out it the country.

That's correct. In fact I just checked Wikipedia and it says this:

"Legally, foreign nationals are forbidden from importing or exporting rupees; Indian nationals can import and export only up to 7,500 rupees at a time, and the possession of 500- and 1,000-rupee notes in Nepal is prohibited."

I have travelled between the UK and India quite a lot. Although they do not check everyone, it is IMHO best to be safe, and get into and out of rupees at the Indian airport.

I do believe that Sri Lankan Rupees, which the OP is referring to, aren't under the same legislation as Indian, hence why I was able to obtain here before I went.
