The scene: We live in the Philippines, wife and daughter are dual nationality, British/Filipino, I'm 100% Brit, live in PI, work in USA.

So, I had planned to take my daughter to the UK for a week or so, in Nov/Dec. Last time I was home I asked the good wife to go check the expiry date on the daughters passport, I asked her nicely, she assured me it was valid for ages. I asked again, pretty please, just physically go and double check rather than use the Filipino 'should be okay' guesswork routine.....

Anyway, I'm back at work, and yesterday the wife e-mailed me to tell me she had finally looked, and the passport expires some time this month.....

I'm not sure the exact date yet, is always the end of the month?

What would happen if we flew to the UK just days before the passport expired? She has a Filipino passport too, but can she exit the UK on an expired UK passport, if we didn't manage to renew it in the UK in time? Or won't they let her out?

I know, I know, I should have gone and checked the passport myself. Hindsight is 20/20 vision etc.

No right minded airline will let her on the plane using the expired UK passport. They probably would using a valid Filipino passport though.

Might be able to spend a nice day in that Lunnon, while you wait for the same day service though, or could the local Embassy sort it out in time?

Passports expire on any day, well any day that is exactly 10 years to the day after issue.

Can you not depart PI on PI passport, enter UK on valid UK passport, depart UK on PI passport, enter PI on PI passport ?............. jobs a good 'un assuming UK passport is valid long enough to enter here. Then once home in PI deal with getting the UK one renewed.

That's the way I'd try, but there might or might not be questions asked on entering the UK with a passport that expires after your intended departure.

I have travelled to the UK on an expired UK passport.

I checked with the Consulate-General in Chicago - I was told there was no issue, as an expired passport was still proof of citizenship.

I had to travel as it was an emergency, and there was no issue upon entry to the UK, I renewed my passport before I returned to the States.

confused If she leaves the PI on the Philippines passport, and enters the UK on the still-valid UK passport, she should be okay.

Once she leaves the UK immigration, when flying out, she will then be travelling on her Philippines passport, to go to the Philippines, so the airline will not be concerned.

What I'm worried about is if the immigration will allow her to leave the UK on an expired UK passport. Assuming she can't get it renewed quickly in the UK.

If she leaves UK on a PI passport they are going to want to know where her visa is, as she will have to be stamped out. Even though she is dual nationality I'm sure she will still need to leave on her UK passport.

I'll only take her in to the UK if it is valid when we arrive, just to be certain, but I don't want to get 'trapped' there because they won't let us out again. She is only eleven years old.

And I don't know exactly how long it takes to get a renewal passport issued in the UK.

From the Philippines it has to be sent to Hong Kong, which can apparently take a month.

Thanks chaps. I might well do that same day thing. Have to book the appointment before we even leave the Philippines though, just to make sure.

I really need to get myself a second passport, for work, so we could go do it together. biggrin

Can't she just travel to and from the UK with the Filipino passport (and any Visa that is required)?

(Does she even need a visa, considering daul UK nationality, irrespective of UK passport validity?)

A'hem. Err, yes, but he said he's coming to the UK for a week or so.

Thus, depart PI on PI passport. Enter UK on UK passport. Renew UK passport. Depart UK on UK passport. Enter PI on PI passport.

No, she'd need a UK visa in the PI passport, if she were to enter the UK on it.

But there is a page on the same site for Brits who live abroad to renew if they are visiting the UK. You can go and collect the passport same day, for a price.

But has she a visa ? If she has right of residency in both countries she is coming and going from home at each point if the passports are shuffled accordingly.

Ah OK, so wouldn't this be the best option in the circumstances? Is getting a visa less handy than getting a new UK passport?

Why can't this simply be a trip to the UK to renew her passport? ( or am I oversimplifying things)

I had my passport renewed the same day - 'twas 10 years ago (need to renew again) but IIRC I paid extra to expedite the process. This was done in the passport office in Glasgow. Probably worth checking with the local office where you are planning to go.

She has no visas, simply two passports, two citizenships. Equal right of abode in either.

I'm thinking that is what it will have to be, unless her UK passport has indeed run out before we get chance to enter the UK, then our trip is stuffed before it begins.

I'd rather have renewed it at our leisure from the Philippines, rather than run about in the UK organising it.

Last time I went to the UK for a weeks visit I took a day trip to Liverpool to get a 4-hour second passport, but there was ONE vital word missing from the letter my company supplied: visas. I needed a letter saying I required a second passport for visa purposes when working offshore. Whole day was wasted, and I had to arrange another letter but I had no time do it and get back to Liverpool again, so it never got done. You have to phone up and make a booking in advance.

And next time I ask my wife to check the date on a passport, I'll bloody well go up and do it myself! Wimmin!
