My wife, son(14)and I spent a couple of days here last year while on a trip to Orlando and I have to say it is not a place for kids. If you are only here for an over nighter it won't cause you many problems but it does not have a safe feel about it perticularly at night and I wouldn't be heading out to far at night with young kids.

With some of the people about I felt myself being wary most of the time while out at night, south beach was the nicest area and the most "Miami" the main part of the city is much like any other big city in the States.

American cities do have a bit of an "edge" about them generally - my mum didn't like NY for that reason even though the statistics show that Manhattan is probably safer than the inside of my house.

I have been to south beach many many times, one year four times ! Ok don't do the board walk after midnight, but a great place. For twenty four hours you will find things to do, over that you have loads within an hour. I was on the last flight into Miami the eve of hurricane George, south beach was boarded up but open, great atmosphere , sounds daft. Also been for Pavarotti on the beach and for my 50 the black eyed peas on the weekend of the Super Bowl . You will have a great time just walking around.
