My girlfriend's birthday is coming up.
Unlike me, she is not at all materialistic. When asked what she want as a present, she just shrugs her shoulders.

She really likes days out and canal walks, countryside pubs etc.

With this in mind, I've decided to put together a few days out for her.

So far I've got tickets for a day on a narrowboat in the Peak District.
A trip on the East Lancs Steam Railway (She loved the last steam railway we went on), then a country pub lunch.

She really loved Warwick Castle, so I'd like to take her to another one.
Anyone been to Beeston or Skipton Castles? Not sure which to get tickets for.

Any other ideas? Maybe within about 90 mins drive of Manchester.

Cheers.

PS. A visit to the OXO Tower will have to wait till we're next in London.

Take her away for the weekend, Langley Castle in Northumberland. Walk the wall, check out Vindolanda.
The big bonus is that there's some great driving roads en route...

Good plan. Looks like there's a few nice places up there. Langley Castle is a hotel now?

That's the sort of info I was after, thanks. I'll cross it off the list.

Does it have to be a "working" castle or will ruins do?

There's Bolton Abbey, Fountains Abbey and one other in York - the name of which I forget.

They are quite interesting to look at, as well as some picturesque walks.

I'm sure you can find some reasonable driving roads in between too smile

ETA: Have a look at this site

I wouldn't say it's quite the most useless suggestion here! Looks amazing.

How about the one that was badly damaged by smoke in 1992?

If you can, go. My OH had a picture of it on her wall, didn't know where it was. We went to Skye on holiday the other year, and she broke down in tears when we rounded the corner on the road and the castle came into view.

It's beautifully restored inside, and you can wander around inside various parts of the building too.

Skipton isn't bad, you can only see the old bit as the other half is a residence - but there's not much of a tour and it's just a lump of rock.

i want to see that castle on the rocks up north - is it lindisfarne.

Fountain abbey is good - but i'd prefer to go on a warm day as its a nice walk around the estate.

Ripley castle is good, they have a good tour and some interesting pieces of armour that they tell you about.

Also, the hall in Gainsborough is worth a visit, i really enjoyed that - great tour and very well presented. You really get a feeling of what life was like living there.

Cheshire?

I drove up past Beeston via the A49 yesterday, was gutted to see the Beeston Castle pub had been closed and boarded up - had one of the best Sunday roasts of my life in there.

Bamburgh Castle is good. A bit further than 90 mins from Manchester though.

I would suggest saving it as a trip for next year around October.

You could make it a weekend trip and combine it with Lindesfarne Island
and a boat trip to the Farne Islands, if you can go around the end of October most of the seals have pupped.
We went for that reason initally and came across Bamburgh by accident, great roads and countryside are a bonus too.

Lindisfarne is Holy Island, a nice day out but not really a castle - think it's more a hard church.
Alnwick castle, on the other hand - that's a proper man's castle.

If you want a decent pub, I can recommend the Freemasons at Wiswell.

Maybe a bit longer than 90 mins, but Cardiff Castle is bloody brilliant. You pretty much get a free run of the place, it's grounds are quite large. I normally hate all that stuff, just reminds me of school trips, but I quietly enjoyed myself!
