Best way to do it is to go to Radio Shack when you land and buy yourself a PAYG phone.
I paid $29 for a cheapo Nokia with AT+T, gives you a US number and means all calls within the US aren't international... it'll save a fortune.

As K50 said... Go to radio shack, target, Walmart, you you can buy a pack with a PAYG phone off the shelf for next to nothing, (as cheap as 10 bucks if you hunt around).

Tesco have the Nokia 100 for 9.99 at the moment, so all you'd need to buy out there is a PAYG SIM.

And you'd get nowhere since the Nokia 100 is not a tri-band phone and hence won't work in the US!

as far as I recall it came with $10 credit (you can buy $10 top up cards anywhere if needed) and yes, it'll work straight out of the box.

Make sure you have your passport on you as they'll take a photocopy when you activate the phone - they'll do all the activation for you so it'll work straight away.

I actually chose to keep mine long term - I top up $100 once a year and that keeps the phone live.... so far it's done 8 trips to 25 different states and never missed a beat.

The last time I went I put the sim in my smartphone, bought a $10 data top up and had full 3G for my 3 week trip.

This is what you want... I bought a Nokia but that's no longer available.

The US always seems so backwards with this. If you want a data sim (not a 'GoPhone' or similar), then it costs an absolute fortune!

At no point did I have to show a passport. I bought the ones in target, off the shelf, and took it home, unwrapped, and activated. Done in a few minutes. very, very easy.

Maybe that's just a Radio Shack thing then.... I bought mine in a brach in Chicago and they wanted a photocopy of the passport.

As far as the data thing goes, I went into an actual branch of AT+T in Seattle a couple of months ago to enquire what I could do about data usage and was extremely surprised... no new sim card, just a code to put into the phone which took $25 of credit from my account and gave me enough data to last nearly 3 weeks with no issues at all (1Gb)

It is 20 quid... Just for the sim... You could buy a phone with credit for that price from a supermarket.

They sometimes have deals on so worth keeping an eye out. That's when I got mine.
